Editorial Review for Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ Dining – by Ginny Chien

The Scene
Traditional (tatami booths) meets modern (exposed overhead piping) in this narrow dining room that buzzes with excitement, perhaps from the anticipation of playing with an open grill. Gregarious servers hustle to a looping soundtrack of hip-hop and electronica. The crowd runs the gamut from hipsters sporting vintage Levi's to families enjoying quality time.

The Food
With outposts on nearly every corner in Japan, Gyu-Kaku is the Starbucks of Japanese barbecue. And like the java joint, this Asian chain boasts the same efficiency and high quality. The fun begins when you get your tongs. Transfer the fresh, uncooked bites of meat to your very own charcoal-powered grill and flip to your heart's desire. Tender kalbi (short ribs), briny shrimp and half a dozen other meats are doused in ta're, the usual soy sauce-based sweet marinade; shio, a salty sesame secret sauce; or miso.

5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended

I LOVE this place! This is always a go-to favorite of mine with friends or out of town guests. The food is high quality, and since you cook it yourself at the table you have control over how rare or well done you like it. I haven't had one dish here that I did not like. Great sake selection - the flavored sake is REALLY good (don't know the name, ask for it). The atmosphere is fun fun fun and the service staff is smiley and attentive. You really do need a reservation as the space is small, and the grill in the middle of the table makes it rather warm (don't wear heavy sweaters!). I HIGHLY recommend this restaurant for a date or a large group of friends.

Pros: Great food, great service, great ambience, great prices

Cons: Need reservations, can get really crowded

If you are looking for high quality Japanese BBQ, then this is the place for you. I have tried pretty much everything on the menu, and you cannot go wrong. The vegetables are always fresh and the meat is top quality. Bear in mind though, with the quality comes a price. A person can expect to spend around $50 a person on a meal. It is worth it though. The service and the food are always top notch.

Pros: Great food and service

Cons: high price
