The Scene – The space formerly occupied by divey Max's has gotten a face-lift and blossomed into a swankier cocktail joint with scarlet walls, linear modern booths and smoky mirrors. No bigger than a living room, this place buzzes with energy. Behind the tiny bar, ultra-attractive bartenders pour simple cocktails--don't try to get fancier than a cosmo here. Despite its sudden hipness, the crowd remains the same--full of casually dressed neighborhood locals downing beers and discussing their future screenplays. – – The Draw – The music ranges from Elvis Costello to the…

Great Music, Great Drinks, No Frills

by NYlivinginLA

I've been in LA for a couple of years now and have to say that The Dime is the bar that I go to most frequently. The Bartenders are gorgeous and the crowd is always a great mix of people out to have a good time. I'm not used to hearing old school Biggie and Tribe at a bar in LA but the DJ's here do an amazing job mixing old with new...something you can't really say about many of the clubs out here. My only beef with this place is that there is no real place to dance but it's not really a dance spot I guess. The best situation is to call ahead and reserve a table (no charge). Definitely worth it.

A Hands-Down Bonafide Staple in LA nightlife

by LAreviewsforDATass

Is it small? Yes. But don't let that deter you from going to The Dime...its part of the charm of the place. The bartenders are awesome (always pouring strong drinks) and the music is good (a lot of rare groove, early 90's hip hop spun by some of the better DJ's that LA has to offer). The crowd is always good...a mix of young Hollywood industry cats, local residents, and true fans of real hip hop (ala De La, Tribe, Mos Def, Kweli, Pharcyde, Ice Cube, Dre, Snoop, Wu Tang etc.). In a town where bars come as quickly as they go, The Dime is truly a gem that is here to stay and is without question my favorite bar in Los Angeles.

  • Pros: Bartenders, Music, Crowd
  • Cons: I used to wear Cons...Chuck Taylors to be specific.

Great if you like bumping into people

by acemanLA

Drinks were Strong, bouncer was surprisingly not-douchey for a LA bar. But this place gets PACKED! and it's not like you have a lot of room to move. Get there early, and get a table (you just sit at them... not like you have to drop $300 and buy a bottle... weird).

But the place is cool, and music is good. Just expect at least one drink to spill on you and quite a few strangers to ask you "mind if I get by you bro?"

  • Pros: Drinks are strong... Bartenders Hot

The Details on The Dime

Parking:

Metered spaces are scarce along Fairfax--search closer to Beverly, or pay $8 to park in the Canter's lot across the street.

The Extras:

There's an alternative to the routine grubbing at Canter's--head next door to Damiano Mr. Pizza, which is open until 6am.

Know Before You Go:

Max's often overlooked smoking laws, but they're strictly enforced by the Dime's staff. So head out front to light up.
