It's all about Angela – I'm a brunette who dyes her hair red, and I was referred to Angela Narinyan by an old roommate after another stylist dyed my hair the wrong shade. Angela got my hair right on the first try, and I've been going to her for years. NO ONE in LA is better with color, and her prices are fantastic. I can't count the number of girlfriends I've sent to her, and they all came away happy. People are convinced I'm a real redhead - even in Ireland, and they know red hair!
It goes without saying that Angela gives a great cut, but I'll say it anyway. She also does eyebrow threading, which is so great for someone like me who can't handle waxing. I barely have to tweeze anymore! She takes good care of you. She's the best kept secret in LA haircare.
Poor manicure service – I purchased groupon online for 75 minut gel manicure with one of the "SPECIALIST"...I am not going to write an essay on how disturbed I feel leaving the salon, but say that I will never get gel manicure there again, and wont recommend it to anyone I know. My nails look horrible as the "specialist" had no clue how to do manicure and had only few colors to choose from. Very disappointing, especially that I live in the neighborhood.
Be aware and take care – I went to this salon on Larchmont after having read the reviews here. I found Haas & Co. while walking by one day after having a great sandwich at the gourmet market. I saw through the window that they use Aveda products and it "seemed" like a high quality salon. So I researched it and decided to take a chance.
I went to Haas & Co. with the sole intention of having my hair lightened a couple of shades, as I was ready and excited for a change. I met with Rachel, who came highly recommended. We spoke for a while about my desires for my hair and the last thing I said to her before she started was "please just make it lighter, I am ready for a change". I also asked for chunky highlights.
3 hours later I had DARKER hair with rusty red thin highlights!!!!! I was so upset.
I called for the manager the next day and was informed that he, Michael Snyder, was on vacation till the next Monday...then it became Thursday...then it became the next week.
The lovely receptionist ( I think her name is Catherine) tried to help me but couldn't do much without the "manager" .
She took down my story and info and said he, Michael Snyder, would call me either Monday or Tuesday. It was Wednesday at 3pm and I still hadn't heard from him yet, so I called him.
He is the most rude, condescending, incapable, incompetent, poorest example of what a manager should be. He did not care to help, to listen or to try to come up with a solution to have my hair fixed. To get me off the phone he said he would speak with Rachel (who by the way is a nice person, just don't go to her if you want your hair the way you want it) and get back to me the next day.
He never called me back and it is now more than a week later. I called to get the salon owner's information and was referred to call Michael for it. Well....he would not give out any information to a friend who called because he knew the friend was calling for me, and Michael Snyder then proceeded to lie and say he was not the manager and shirk responsibility over to Catherine (the receptionist) and said that she is the manager!!!!! He is slimy.
He should be fired.
Hurrahhh for Pilen – There's only one word to describe Haas & Co, and Pilen for that matter - AMAZING. Hey, I'm a guy who doesn't enjoy getting my hair cut (among other things) but I have been seeing Pilen for over 15 years and he has never done anything but an amazing job on my hair! It's one thing to get compliments about your style, or looks but when women go out of their way to comment on how good your hair cut looks, you know someone's doing something right. Not sure what's up with the unhappy bride ... maybe she was on a budget ... every woman I know who has gotten married has paid hundreds or even thousands of dollars for their (& bridesmaids) hair - mostly because I think the hairdresser needs to spend so many hours with them and, hey, you gots to pay the piper! GO PILEN ... I'm one big fan!
Five Stars (And if Possible, Six!) for Pilen – Years ago, when traffic was the daily bane of my existence and I cared (only slightly) more about celebrity gossip, one of the happiest Los Angeles rituals I look back upon were those visits to my man, Pilen.
I have since relocated to San Francisco, where I've tried and tried (but CANNOT) match Pilen's quality and mastery with scissors. Otherwise, San Francisco is a pretty great place.
You can imagine my atonishment to see that nasty Pilen review below. My friends, Pilen is NOT dishonest. He is a sweet man, a kind soul, and MOST importantly, he KNOWS how to work a mean style on your head. The person below obviously had some sort of miscommunication, and I've seen a lot of friends pay too much for "wedding hair." (Oh, I went there!)
If I was still in LA, I'd hire him for my wedding, pretty much at any price. I'd recommend him to anyone.
In fact, I did recommend him to a good girlfriend. And she's stayed with him for YEARS.
Now, for the GOOD stuff. Case in point, Pilen can style hair for people like myself (who are incapable of good hair days), and man, for the 2-3 days after he cuts it, it looks amazing. If I could wait any longer to wash it, you know I would.
What's MORE! In the 3 months after my cut (yes, I wait that long) the hair still looks damn good. Especially considering I do nothing with my hair. Imagine the possibilities for motivated hair doers!
And so it goes. Pilen: a hair blessing. And an all around lovely person.
Beware of Pilen and his fluctuating prices and dishonest service – I went to Haas & Company regularly for the past several years and had my hair highlighted, colored, and cut by Pilen. I asked Pilen to do my hair for my wedding, and he surprised me on my wedding day by charging me $550 to style my hair. He hadn't given me a written contract ahead of time and didn't tell me about the huge price jump until my hair was already done and my wedding was only in an hour. I had no choice but to pay it. However, he'd only charged my bridesmaids $85 for their style, and he still had plenty of room in the rest of the day for other appointments. He insisted that he was giving me "a deal," however the week before he had cut my hair, colored it, and did a trial style for just over $200. Plus, the style that I had on my wedding day wasn't even an updo. It was simply down with waves in it. He took advantage of me on a very important day, and after having him as my hair stylist for many years before I would never have expected it of him.
Since that time I've talked to other people who also had used him as their hairdresser, and they had similar situations where the amount he charged jumped dramatically without any prior notice. It was an awful feeling to be taken advantage of on my wedding day. I would highly recommend avoiding Pilen.
Looks small from the outside... – I was referred to this salon by a friend, and it's amazing. All of the staff is super friendly, and they have a variety of services like manis and pedis, as well as color and cut. I recommend Diego for cut. He's always done a really good job and also gives me tips on how to maintain the style!
