Excessively Loud Music Ruins Unique Little Bar.
This could be a true stand-out bar, but unfortunately it blends into the long list of take-it-or-leave-it establishments around LA.
I've been to The Black Boar (even when it was called the Chalet) about a dozen times over the last five years, and every time my friends and I end up leaving after one drink. The music is WAY WAY too loud.
The appeal of the place is it's "ski lodge" decor, dark wood beams, big fireplace, relaxed atmosphere, cool staff, and unique beers on tap. It appears like a great place to get a few drinks and talk the night away with friends. But the music is played so loud, and it's such an intimate space, that you can barely have a conversation. To compensate everyone in the place has to yell, which is not pleasant in such a small space. The music is so loud it absolutely hurts your ears and makes you want to escape.
(What business does loud music have in a ski lodge anyway? The whole thing doesn't make sense.)
The Black Boar could really be a fantastic bar, unfortunately the inexplicable need to have an over-the-top "vibe" with excessively loud music ruins the experience.
Citysearch Editorial Review. Formerly a place to grab a martini, this Eagle Rock bar has transformed into a laidback neighborhood pub where tattooed motorcycle riders and T-shirt clad patrons can snap up an ice-cold brew. The cavernous, rocker-style pad is tinted with scarlet lighting courtesy of the retro lamps that hover above its wood tables, and the exposed rock walls and stuffed wild boar hanging overhead give it a grungy, rustic feel. While the bar is lined with dozens of bottles of hard liquor, the pub is already known for its wide beer selection, which includes brews from England and Scotland. However, if you're hungry, be forewarned: The bar doesn't serve food, but you can bring whatever you want to eat inside. Or you can even have the bar place your order at nearby restaurants for delivery.
RAD.
This bar has a great vibe, it always makes you feel comfortable. The size is great, you are rarely ever squished in a corner even on the most busy night, and even when the place is empty (rare) the decor makes the whole room feel more homey. This is one of my favorite local dive bars, their is always an eclectic crowd to keep people watchers interested.
The only drawback is that if you came for conversation, you will probably end up a little horse by the end of the night since the music is a-l-w-a-y-s LOUD!!!

WORST.
The bar is good, but the security guy is a complete jock.
Arrogant, pushy, & mean. I wouldn't recommend going there.
Great Local Bar; Strong Drinks. The drinks are strong and the crowd is full of locals on any night of the week, but mostly crowded on Thursdays-Saturdays. Dress is very casual.
Great Ambience, Great Staff, Excellent Times!. I met up my girlfriends for a birthday drink after escaping the drunken college kid over-filled Brass Monkey on a Saturday. Coming into a loungy area and enjoying actual conversation with my friends was great. Drinks were reasonalbe, Tommy's down the street for a greasy bite to eat and a great crowd. No VIP lines, no valet... just a great bar. I loved it. This will be my new favorite spot!
best in eagle rock. "this is my favorite neighboorhood bar. It's a good crowd, the staff is great, and the jukebox has an awesome selection. The place is also fun during the week, especially on wednesdays."
Weak drinks, not so friendly staff. I went on a Friday nite with a group of friends and one of my friends left a tab open. Well, at the end of the nite, the bartender handed back my friend another credit card that was not hers. The bartender took no responsibility, was very dry and indifferent and she really did not seem to care. Before that, the drinks had already been a little on the weak side. The place is really small and the ceiling is low so if you're claustrophobic it's not a good place for you. The only plus side is the bouncer, he's cool!
