good eclectic food, great fun place, great weak drinks, cool decor, great salsa margaritas, great service, best mexican food
Funky cool, expensive. This place has a cool vibe - all elvis and purple velvet and big scale in a little venue. This place is also a bit overpriced, and needs a bit better happy hour. Good for special occasions.
My favorite!.
I love this place. I remember a few years ago when the neighborhood was not so cool. Now there are all kinds of new places to hang out and eat! But this place is my favorite.
Me and my girlfriends always start the evening and end it at "La Velvet." The vibe is very Hollywood... so squares should probably just go to El Torito or something... But if you really want to have some great margaritas and have a nice, sit down meal with great Mexican food before a club or a show, this is a great place to do it.
Tips. Use the valet. As a woman, I don't always like to park far away. So I keep it safe. Plus, after you eat or have some drinks you can check out the other cool places in the neighboorhood. But we always end up back here anyway. Also, try all the margaritas. We order a few different ones and pass them around... Huge selection! There's a bartender named Tom or Thomas who's very cute and very nice. English too! We try to go when he's working... For dinner, I always order the albondigas soup. Better than my grandma's... (Sorry gramma!) I also love their mole and the chicken enchiladas. Just like home... but don't have to shop or do dishes.
Friends take me to their favorite places and I always end up bringing them here. And it's just such a great place to hang out, it usually becomes their favorite too.
deleting old post. im deleting my earlier post because i had a great talk with the manager, and then owner and theyre handling it in the most professional way possible.
an LA find from a guy who used to eat out in theEast Village.
If the Korova Milk Bar were Mexican, it would be this place. Everytime I go in I notice some new crazy element of the decor that I hadn't previously. I happened upon this place years ago at the insistance of a friend and I have been going back frequently ever since. I've had 3 favorite places to get good Mexican food in LA over the past 20 years and this is one of them.
Everytime I'm in I try something new. Generally, I'm a creature of habit and stick with a favorite dish, but because the staff kinda knows me now and we have a mutual comfort level thing going, it's understood that I will be trying their newest creations because I initially used to order the same thing EVERY time. It's also a given at this point, that I will probably love it...unless it's mole. I'm one of the one's that doesn't "get" mole. Chocolate and meat were never meant to meet. Most recently, though, I tried the Pineapple Salsa Chicken: Total Awesomeness!
Velvet is always subject to a slightly different vibe depending on the day of the week and time of day, but no matter when I've been in it's always been cool. At times the main bar is full of happy-looking patrons, at times the whole joint is abuzz, at times the place looks kinda dead but then you stumble onto a mob partying down on the back patio, dancing the night away to the Velvet's muy especial brand of eclectic musica. Recently, I've been stopping in for lunch. Way cool spot for lunch...and the parking in a relative breeze.
If the lots in the area are filled up already or cost too much, and the valet expense would be the straw that broke date night's back, and walking from east of Vine is too much for you, then you're probably a native of LA and you may want to cab it on any given day after 7pm. Cahuenga is quite popular with the kids.
Awesome food. Comfy kinda "hide out" vibe. Lots of Hollywood eye candy. Good music. Meximuertovelvis interior. Stiff drinks. Attentive and warm service. And good prices.
I'm from New York originally...I park and walk from east of Vine.
REALLY?. First off this place is so Hollywood wannabe. Attitude up the yang. Every employee acted as if their mother told them they had to be there. Food was nothing special except for the churros for dessert and the chips. Margs were only good if you upgraded to the - $12 ones. Yes folks $12 bucks which I would gladly pay for if they didn't have all this attitude. Loteria up the street is SO MUCH better food and attitude wise.
Great Margaritas and happy hour specials*. We really enjoyed ourselves here for my sisters birthday. Great Venue!
Amazing Margaritas!. Even though parking doesn't exist in this area....it is worth paying for it if you're heading to the Velvet Margarita. Their margaritas are well priced and delicious, and the music in the back room was awesome! Great ambiance within the restaurant and cool decor!
What’s The Deal With No Corona?.
Sorry I’m a white guy who ordered a Corona – I guess it’s part of their protocol to make you feel like a jackass if you order a Corona.
The snooty bartender with the British accent took the opportunity to verbally chastise me regarding the evils of Corona being an Anheuser-Busch product that does not support the Mexican economy. He adamantly stated that the Velvet Margarita only carries true Mexican beers – and with that, he bought me a Sol (Mexican beer) and introduced it as “Corona-esque”, but with a superior taste. And – I’ll be damned – he was right! Now I’m a Sol drinker! VIVA MEXICO!!!
