waist of energy, time, and money – first of all, i wish i had thoroughly did research when i decided I wanted to go to beauty school. GO TO MUD at least. they teach beauty AND FX makeup. then there's this creepy 'success coaching/therapy' course that "teaches" you how to succeed in life. I have been a freelance makeup artist for 5 years since graduating and have NEVER applied their teaching to any photo shoot i've been on, it was completely irrelevant.
and we also had chores. we had to clean the kitchen, vacuum, clean the bathroom, sweep, take out the trash..etc. before we could leave. I mean you have staff to do that, then you ask yourself where is our $13,000 going towards?
anyways, you will pay way too much money for a bleak makeup and hair kit, and 5 retouched photos. Please look around before you go here!!!!
oh and the place looks like a crack house.
DO NOT GO TO THIS SCHOOL! HONESTLY – OK SO IM GOING TO BE TOTALLY HONEST WITH ALL YOU PEOPLE, THE PEOPLE THAT ARE WRITING GOOD REVIEWS ARE LIEING STRAIGHT UP YOU ALL KNOW THIS SCHOOL WAS AND IS A WASTE OF MONEY. SAVE YOURSELF THE TIME AND MONEY AND JUST WATCH YOUTUBE TUTORIALS TRUST ME YOU WILL LEARN SO MUCH MORE THAT WAY. THE MONEY YOU'RE GOING TO SPEND GOING TO THIS SCHOOL YOU CAN SPEND BUYING A MAKEUP KIT AND SO ON. PLEASE TAKE MY ADVISE AND DO NOT GO TO THIS SCHOOL,
If youre passionate about becoming a makeup artist.. – I attended MKC Beauty Academy in Sept 2010 and would highly recomend this school to any one who is SERIOUS about becoming a professional MUA. They dont just teach you makeup at MKC, (even though yes you will do lots and lots of makeup every day) but they also teach you the business side of what being a freelance artist is really like and how to market yourself and run your business. You also learn Beauty lighting, so that you are prepared to go on set and you know all of the terms, and what the camera will pick up. Margaret Kimura actually teaches some of the classes, and all of the teachers are working in the industry and have so much great advice and techniques! Getting to work with several different teachers alows you to learn different ways of achieving looks, and they really help you to train your eye to see what the camera will see (you look at all of your work on HD cameras!) Mike and Yvonne are always there for you, you can always pop in and talk. It really is like a little makeup family there, and they really care about you and want you to be successful. All of the classes are small so you get individual attention, you get to work with top photographers in the business, and leave with an amazing portfolio, which is huge in helping you get work after graduation! As an alumni I get lots of job updates from the school. This is the only school I think fully prepares you to become a professioinal MUA, because there really is so much more to it than applying flawless makeup (even though you will learn techniques to become a print level makeup artist). I dont know why anyone wrote negative comments, I had a very positive experience attending this school. It is very intense training and they do give you critiques (which is only to help you become a better artist) so you have to be prepared to give it your all. Attending MKC has given me everything I need to have a long and successful career in an industry that I am passionate about!
Journey at MKC academy – I attended MKC, in FEB 2010. I can only speak from my experience, and MKC academy changed my life. I am a firm believer of " every lesson is what you make of it."Going into any school, there will be high stress days and days of fun learning. Number one: school is to learn and better yourself. I knew when I walked into MKC, it was my choice and I was ready to challenge myself as an artist and individual. So in this case, I walked in with open arms and I was ready to give my all. As I did! And it was one of the best decisions I have made!!! MkC introduced me into the artist side of make up, the business world of how the industry works and how to become the artist YOU choose to be. I was taught from teachers that are continually working in the industry. I was there to learn everyday, and I gave my best. It was well worth the hard work and I am a better artist for it. I went with every intention of learning the arts of make up, yet on top of learning the arts, I left with friends that have touched my life in such a changing positive light. I continue these friendships and feel grateful. When you are looking at schools, go with your heart and be sure to go for the right reasons. Being a make up artist is hard work. It's about putting all your efforts, working on your craft constantly, being able to adapt and take critique's to become better. It's not just applying make up and being a part of the glamour, Yes of course, there are aspects of excitement, possible media attention and THAT glamour. But you need to "think on your feet, dedicate your time, learn to be smart with your financials and possibly compromise your personal life to weekends, holidays and looong hours. I chose this career because I've always been an artist, and it is in my blood. I also knew the work behind it would be well worth the ride. So, if you are looking for a career that will bring you satisfaction, growth, opportunity to be creative and to work with all kinds of people, make up artistry is for you. I currently am working on well paid gigs for webseries, high fashion editorials, films and continue to learn and grow. I hope this can help a few of you and best of luck with your search! Remember it's YOUR path and it's what you make it. It's easy to follow, it's a more challenging path to lead.
Other Local Makeup Schools are Way Better – This school is crap! Also, I'm assuming that the people writing these "good" reiews are people that either a) work there or b) own the place because everyone I went to school there with had a terrible experience. I have also talked to other alumni from different classes and they shared the same bad experience. I'm not going to go in to detail about my experiences but I would just say that this place is not worth anyone's time or money. I have heard great things from other makeup schools in the area from friends that attended and I wish I wouldn't have made the mistake of choosing MKC. My advice would be to really investigate this school if you plan on attending because it is expensive and I truly feel like I did not get what I paid for while also having a terrible time. I really thought I was going to have a good time pursuing my dream but after school I just felt taken advantage of. I regret going to this school and I'm warning people to not make the same mistake I did. And as far as the comments of "you make things possible" and "your success all depends on you". I have been successful in the makeup industry where I am working now but that doesn't help the fact that my experience at MKC was a horrible one. BEWARE!!
Great Experience! – I attended MKC in Feb 2010 and I absolutely had a wonderful experience. I was able to expand my knowledge in the arts of make up. Further then that though, we were taught about the business side of marketing and running your business. At MKC they teach you how to become a sucessful make up artist/business owner. MKC wants you to learn every angle of the industry. I graduated feeling ready to start my career and to feel comfortable with my creativity because I had so much practice. You learn everything from natural beauty, tv make up to avant garde. You have small intimate classes so you have a ton of one on one and you are able to understand each technique. The teachers are very experienced and they guide you to be a better artist. It changed my life and I would highly recommend this school to anybody who is looking to be a creative, professional, sucessful makeup artist!!!
Lifetime experience! – If you truly believe that being makeup artist is what you want to do, you are ready to work hard and never give up I can assure you that this school will be a huge and unrepeatable step into big career in fashion world.
I graduated form MKC Beauty Academy just one year ago. I come from little town in Poland and to go to school in another part of the world right after graduating form high school and without knowing english language too well was a big challenge for me and at the same time the best what could met me at this time! I found this school beeing 17 years old girl and since then it was my big dream to go MKC! Right after my high school I flight to MKC to make a big step into carrera Im living for.
Yvonne was in touch with me for all this time before coming to school and she was answering for every of my question and supporting me what was very helpful, they even helped me to find accommodation!
Everything in this school was over my expectations!
Although I was just one person in my class from other country, everybody was super nice and open to help me break my language berrier. You can rely on everybody there!

After graduation from MKC (last year) I decided to move to Paris. I was ready for every challenge which life will bring to me! I didn't have any worries to just go on the shoot with people I have never met, all of the work situations stop being stressful for me. I am here just since 10 months and already Im working for many fashion magazines, fashion shows, advertisements, catalogues, look books with one of the best photographers and models form the biggest agencies and celebrities.
I can feel how much this school helped me, I got lots of amazing skills, I am able to do perfect lips, eyebrows... My eyes are wider open for every single detail. Because all professionalism I have got there, I know how to behavior on each job, how to market myself and many many more skills thanks for this I am getting higher and higher with every single month.
Every single class and step in MKC is prepared perfectly, I would not add neither change anything!
I feel really thankful for all the strength, all knowledge, all love, and confidence I got from MKC Beauty Academy. This school was the best choice I could make !!!
If not MKC Beauty Academy I would never be where I am now!
Great School! – I attended MKC a little over two years ago. I am now a very successful make-up artist who is well on my way to an amazing career and would NOT BE WHERE I AM in my career if it were not for MKC. Two years into my career I have already keyed films, commercials (for national campaigns), worked with top fashion designers and am the assistant to one of the top artists in the industry. The school was crucial to my success that I have had and to my future success.
Without going into every aspect of the course, they give you all of the make-up classes you need, then on top of that; a beauty lighting course, business class and success coaching. These extra classes are priceless to your career and you will not find these key classes in any other school. The school gives you the tools and education and it is up to you what you do with it, as it is with any education.
While there, I learned all of the crucial things every successful MUA needs to know in order to be a professional, successful and well round MUA. I will say that it is not the school that is going to make it a success for you, it is yourself. You give it your all, you will receive all.
The owners and staff are very personable and will be your lifelong supporters. The school constantly reaches out to the alumni, sends us job boards, and invites us back for refresher courses and gatherings. You will not find a more intimate and supportive school than MKC.
I am extremely happy that I attended the school and would not be where I am now without it! It was a great leaping point into my career. Thank you MKC!
Terrible Experience! – I regret going to this school so much! It's really sad how fake they are in the beginning and then once you've payed for the school their true colors really come out. I'm not writing this out of spite for anything that happened in particular to me... it was just the experience as a whole.
First off, the makeup kit. When I was signing up for school I was told that our kits would be all makeup forever. Well, when I went to pay my deposit I took a tour of the school and was told by the counselor that our kits would now be INuovi. I checked out the makeup the had on display and it was very nice and I was happy with it. When we recieved our kits, it turned out that only about half the kit was INuovi. The other half was makeup with literally no brand name on it at all. All of the foundations and other numerous items had only color name on them and that was it. Who knows really what they were.
Now I was part of a very small class and because of that we had a lot of the program shortened and or cancelled without any money returned for the time taken away. The whole section of the program called "Success Coaching" was cancelled because "it is designed for a bigger group and wouldn't work out as well with such a small group. That was suppose to be three days I believe, a wednesday, thursday, and friday. It might have been just 2 a thursday and friday. Well anyways that Friday we all got called telling us not to come into school on Monday and Tuesday as well. So that became a whole week of no teaching or school at all.
During the first day of business class with Margaret, 5 of our 8 hours was spent talking about no business at all, but rather the problems of one student. "Life Coach" Margaret decided it was more important to talk about her problems than teach was she was actually suppose to completely wasting most of the day on this student. We all just sat there wondering when we were actually going to learn something instead on sitting in on this counseling session.
Now again because we were such a small class Mike and Margaret asked us if we would like to do an accelerated version of the program which would cut the entire program by about 2 weeks. They promised us that we would have models everyday to work on so that we'd be doing twice as much makeup instead of sitting while a classmate would be working on us. This seemed like a really good idea at the time, but it didn't end up working out quite as promised. There were quite a few days when we had no models at all. We were an uneven number of students so at any given time there was always at least 1 student with no one to work on and nothing to do.
Teachers. Some were extremely good and made my experience pretty good. Others were completely unprofessional. They would come to class late, including Margaret herself, again wasting our time and money. They would be on their cell phones or out of the class room so if we did have question on anything it could not be answered. They would come back late from lunch leaving us sitting their waiting on them.
Overall I feel scammed and played by this school. It was a complete waste of money and completely unprofessional when they're biggest motto is all about how "professional" they are. They arent. At all. They are fake and pretend to care when they don't. They lie and rob you with absolutely no remorse. It's just one huge counseling session.
Not for it or against it, but not feeling it. – The teachers are ok, not impressed with any other aspect of this school though.
