pretty good fish, cold beer, pretty good chips, fantastic brits, warm shepherds pie, attentive waiter, great service
Bye bye Brits!. I'm starting with the disappointing factors first to get your attention. I ordered the fish & chips and an import lager (beer). The french fries were greasy, flavorless and about what you'd expect at a highschool cafeteria (from what I remember). The meal came with peas. I'm quite happy with frozen peas and never eat canned peas. The peas they served were very over cooked, dry, tasteless and poured over the french fries. There was no butter for them, a spritz of lemon or anything. The meal was about as bland as you can possibly imagine. The fish piece. One fish piece. The fish inside the batter seemed fine. I'm sure on its own would have been a decent filet. However, the breading was nothing special at all. All mediocre quality with no appreciable flavor as bragged about in their menu. I'm from Washington state and have been privileged to eat at fine restaurants most of my life. The fish here is just okay. Also, the tartar sauce given was the quality you'd expect at a fast food restaurant and even served in the tiniest plastic container with a lid. I know and make my own tartar sauces and expected better. I ate all the fish, ran out of tartar sauce, ate as much of the french fries and peas as I could stomach and left a good portion of them for the trash can. I drank the beer, but wished I hadn't. I like to beer I've never had before and it's no fault of the restaurant for my choice, but I was urked to have payed this place $6.00 extra for it. The waiter was pleasant and attentive enough. He did "eventually" come back to ask how my food was. But at this point I was very disappointed and silently brooding over the waste of money it was. A couple received the fish and chips and the gentleman had two pieces of fish. Not sure why. The total for this lousy meal was over $18.00. I truly felt ripped off for what I got. $6.00 for the beer and $10.95 for the food I didn't finish. I'll never go back and I'm sure most won't either. Bye bye Brits!
Bad British Food.
WOW what more can one say............. I was expecting a homely feel when I came to this establishment and instead was greeted by a very rude waitress! Now I know the reason why I left England as this individual was the rudest ice maiden I have ever come across, gives us British people a bad name!
Hey the food is not that much to rave about and the deco is a like a demolition derby. So as you can guess it is no home away from for this English chix
Best fish & chips in LA. I've had my share of fish & chips in this town and these have got to be the best. The crust is wonderfully crunchy, yet light...the fish is tender and melts in your mouth. I can actually eat it without the tartar sauce and malt vinegar (though its even better with those two things)! Servings sizes are more than adequate for most people. The shepherd's pie is also delightful.
Curry Chips!. This is an unassuming place on Colorado that can be easily missed. The owner is authentic and the beer is decent. Prices are about average, and the curry rocks. Its worth a stop. Shephards Pie is above average.
Good British Beer & Fish n' Chips.
Visited twice on Friday evenings. The bar has a good atmosphere and the British beers have traveled well. My wife is vegetarian and ate the sauteed veggies on rice, and was favorably impressed. I had the fish & chips, it was surprisingly good, nice crisp batter and moist flaky white fish inside. The staff are variable in quality, the girl behind the bar can be a little abrupt and distant, but the wait staff seem to be OK.
It seems that the bar is the place to be, on both occasions I have been here recently the dining room has been empty and lacks character.
If you want a good pint and some english fare you won't go far wrong here - but don't expect cordon bleu cookery or overly friendly service - the customers on the other hand all seem friendly and happy to chat!
Burned.
My husband and I tried this place 3 times. It was always in need of more business. The last time we were there, an article in a local paper had brought in some new business and they were crowded.
We ordered 5 drinks each time we went (3 wines and 2 beers), an appetizer or salad, an entree, and either a side order or dessert. Our bills tended to around $60. The last time, we were informed that they did not want to serve one entree to two people. They didn't ask for a split charge, they just told us we'll be required to order two
entrees.
We are repeat customers, we tip well (20-30%), and get great service. Thisexperience was unique, and we were offended by the attitude of the man that informed us about this "policy", and felt so unwelcome we never went back.
best fish & chips in town!. I've never been a fish & chips fan. My friend got the fish & chips & I got Steak & Mushroom Pie. Our meals were outstanding! Greg got curry sauce to dip his fish in, and I realized why I didn't like it before - it's the vinegar. Next time I got the fish & chips and some curry sauce - now I'm hooked! The fish was light & tasty, not greasy. Crispy on the outside, tender & flaky on the inside. It was one big piece of fish, not a bunch of fish sticks! The salad was fresh, the beer was cold, the prices reasonable. We ate at the bar both times. The dining room is a bit sterile, but they're working on opening up the wall between the 2 rooms, so that will help. I highly recommend Brits AND the fish & chips!!!
Blah Blah Blah Brits. How sad was I? Brits is one of those places that you drive by and think, I really need to try that place. I went in on Friday night and there was a bunch of people waiting for their orders. It all seemed so promising. The servings were a good size, the batter looked yummy but some how they managed to not include a single bit of flavor, nothing, nada, zip. The fries were blah, the salad was like the salad in the bag, almost wilted and lacking any real taste. The roll was good, though. I feel I could've saved myself $10 on the dinner and nibbled on a packet tartar sauce and been more pleased.
