Editorial Review for Out of the Closet Thrift Store – by Harper Madden
The Scene
This L.A. institution on the thrift shop circuit benefits the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. Inside, expect a haphazard smattering of furniture, clothing and housewares, some of which is a solid step up from Goodwill and Salvation Army inventories. A hodgepodge of folks patronize the place, from college kids looking for first apartment furnishings to seasoned bargain hunters. The staff is approachable and strives to be helpful.
The Goods
A good deal of the furniture is arguably junk, but there are solid, working appliances (TVs, fax machines, VCRs) at more than bargain prices--if the bulky design of retro models isn't a problem. The book section is extensive, reasonably priced and full of well-known authors and titles. There's even a sparse selection of scripts (this is, after all, an industry town). Dishes and glassware tend to be in respectable condition. There are lots of random art prints and tchochkes to be had.
