What People Are Saying About Masa-Echo Park Bakery & Cafe

Featured Review

Run by a group of ex-Patina staffers, Masa offers a familiar and gracious vibe, as if it's been in the neighborhood for years. The tile-floored, wood-beamed spot was once a Cuban bakery, but it has been transformed into an airy, three-zoned space with a bakery case, lunch counter and sit-down restaurant. Walls are hung with vintage local photos and paintings of area landmarks while the glass windows are plastered with photos of local pooches that need loving homes. The menu includes deep-dish Chicago-style pizzas, paninis, crepes, salads and a few select Parisian desserts.

Editor's Tips

Parking:
If there are no metered spots on Sunset, head south at Lemoyne, where there's a big city lot two buildings down on the left.
Save Time:
For the fastest service--particularly for solo diners--sit at the lunch counter.
Know Before You Go:
Pizzas are made fresh to order, and take about 30 minutes to be served. You can also call ahead for takeout.

  3. searched high and low for authentic Chicago-style pizza in the city, and found this fun, lively, little restaurant in Echo Park.
  4. Easy going atmosphere, the staff is friendly if you go there with a regular which is nice.
  5. The decor and ambience of this place is so unique that I have never seen any like it.
  6. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and seems like an oasis from the busy Sunset Blvd right outside.
  7. i've never been met with any pretension, the servers are always attentive, and it can be equally cozy/romantic and fun for a larger group.

  2. nice microbrews on tap and a croissant bread pudding that could be a meal itself (the chocolate powder nestled between the layers if perfect and the caramel sweet but not overpowering.

  1. Other people seemed to like the pizza at my office though.
  2. This neighbor spot makes a great cuban sandwich, fresh baked rosemary bread, and bread pudding to write home about!
  3. This is hands down the best pizza in LA and the only Chicago- style worth trying.
  4. For some time now I have been looking for a good and in-expensive deep dish pizza restaurant.
  5. Excellent pizza
  6. the food is diner food but not good diner food.
  7. nice microbrews on tap and a croissant bread pudding that could be a meal itself (the chocolate powder nestled between the layers if perfect and the caramel sweet but not overpowering.
  8. The food is always wonderful and the waitstaff is always nice.
  9. Our food is always great at Masa and the menu is always evolving.
  10. Still, I would definitely recommend this place, if only because they're friendly, independant, local and make a great cuban bread!
  11. We loved everything about the place and the pizza.
  12. I'm torn about Masa-- the employees are really nice, the portions are giving, the decor is adorable and comfy, the coffee is good and yes, it is true-- the pizza is totally yummy.
  13. As transplanted Chicagoans, we are always looking for a good replacement for Giordano's, Uno's, Nancy's deep dish/stuffed pizza that we love and for a good long time Masa was IT.
  14. Try the deep dish, it truly is the closest thing in LA to an authentic Chicago style deep dish!
  15. It's hard to enjoy the deep dish when you're constantly rummaging through the sauce, thereby dissecting the pizza, just to pick out garlic chunks.
  16. After reading people rave about the pizza on this site, I decided to try some and was disappointed.
  17. and don't get me started on the bread pudding - sinfully delicious!
  18. While the food is ok here, I stopped going after an unreal encounter with a very rude member of the staff here.
  19. After hearing that the pizza takes an hour to prepare and that the waitstaff is so nice, I called ahead to order two pizzas so we wouldn't have to wait too long.
  20. Love the Manchego salad and piping hot bread.
  21. In regards to the rest of the food, Masa needs to find a different way to flavor their food than using dried herbs and their favorite seasoning of all--SALT.
  22. The crust is flaky like Giordano's in Chicago (that's a good thing) and the sauce was rich in flavor, not as bland as other reviewers have stated.
  23. so maybe I just don't like deep dish.
  24. The pizza was amazing!
  25. The texture of the crust is fresh and the cheese is not dry or sticky like in most other places.
  26. The food is wonderful and the staff knows me and my husband my name and even remembers our orders without us having to tell them!
  27. Good food and well priced.
  28. searched high and low for authentic Chicago-style pizza in the city, and found this fun, lively, little restaurant in Echo Park.
  29. Very affordable food with excellent service.
  30. enjoyed the plain butter croissants--they're fluffy and fresh and big enough to share.
  31. An ideal and inexpensive place to share a couple of beers, good conversation, and delicious food.
  32. Very friendly, great bread, not-so-great pizza
  33. Also the pizza is beyond great, it took me a while to find a chicago style deep dish pizza but I found it, (though give yourself an hour for the pizza it takes that long to make).
  34. I've tried two different crepes twice and both times I could hardly take a few bites as I felt like I was engulfing the likeness of the Pacific ocean in my mouth--but with spinach and mushroom (of course I thought the staff was so nice I didn't want to co
  35. They also have excellent salads and hot, pressed sandwiches.
  36. The Chicago style pizza is wonderful, and so is the bistro style pizza.
  37. However, my first experience with breakfast food was pretty good and I am going back today for lunch with a "regular" so I should get good service.
  38. Their Chicago style pizza is ridiculous.
  39. Also, I'm not a big fan of bread pudding but I've actually become addicted to Masa's version of the dish.
  40. The buffalo pizza (buffalo sauce with buffalo chicken, blue cheese and celery) is truly addictive.
  41. Also, the food was subpar (in my opinion).
  42. The deep dish pizza, cuban sandwich, baked olive bread, and the bread pudding are my favorite dishes.
  43. The brunch is especially tasty--- I recommend the french toast with veggie sausage!
  44. However, the pizza is awesome and I highly encourage you all to give them a shot.
  45. No worries, good pizza is worth it.
  46. For example, I ordered a salad and requested the cheese on the side ( I am lactose/glutten intolerant + was sharing it with a friend who loves cheese).
  47. While the pizza is great, I don't see myself ordering it again anytime soon.
  48. The fresh bread comes out hot and delicious.
  49. Big variety in types of food.
  50. the wait staff are nice and it's open late so you can go after the bar closes and get some tiny fries.
  51. The food is pretty decent as well, and they have deep dish pizza.
  52. The sauce is tooo sweet and has a weird spicy-ness that doesn't work at all for pizza.
  53. Not only is the pizza excellent but the staff is incredibly attentive and kind.
  54. Oh yes, the bread-pudding is ridiculously good and ridiculously fattening.
  55. It had the same characteristics of an authentic Chicago-style deep dish!
  56. Great food owned by Echo Park locals
  57. Filled to the brim with toppings, and I have NEVER liked pizza crust until now!
  58. The owners and primary cooks were from Chicago and clearly got what it took to make good pizza (delicate balance of great crust and not too sweet sauce).
  59. The pizza was delicious and worth the wait, and the staff was incredibly helpful and enthusiastic.
  60. I've been going to Masa's for over 8 months now, and have had consistently great food, and great service.
  61. Nice people but too much street noise and food subpar
  62. Just don't order the pizza!
  63. If you like deep dish you will love Masa!
  64. We called to get pizza delivery and were told that they no longer delivered (and in a very rude tone to boot) so we stopped enjoying the pizza for a good long while as we just don't go out to dinner as much (we have 2 kids 4 and 6 years old ).

Had the worst experience at a restaurant we've ever had

by littletree323

We stopped by this place on our way to The Echo and literally had the worst experience we've ever had at a restaurant due to an extremely rude waitress and an equally rude owner that made no moves to remedy the situation after we tried to talk to him about our concerns. They simply don't care about customer service. We were told to "Go back to where ever you came from, leave, and we don't need for you to come back." At this point I used a very descriptive word for the waitress and I regret that I let them drag me to their level but I was literally in shock at their attitudes. When I walked away the owner said "Have a nice life". It was then that I realized they must just enjoy being able to get away with humiliating customers or have insurmountable problems with the business. The country is falling apart, there's one disater after another, and people are out there sacrificing their lives for our freedoms so why can't we just all take a deep breath and treat each other with loving kindness? Is good customer service too much to ask?

“A customer is the most important visitor on our premises. He is not dependent on us. We are dependent on him. He is not an interruption of our work. He is the purpose of it. He is not an outsider of our business. He is part of it. We are not doing him a favour by serving him. He is doing us a favour by giving us the opportunity to do so.” - Mahatma Gandhi

Better Company Sitting Than Working

by dfaye44

The workers are all pretentious and as soon as you finally sit who knows how long it will be till you are given any attention by your server or anyone who works there. I understand its got great food and drinks and i love the vibe, but come on i need a glass of water and a menu... is that so much to ask for in a freakin Cafe?

L.A. Times

by jessirabbit

I ate several times at masa because the cuban sandwhich and pizza were good but the service was extremely poor. The owners were very rude to me and to the staff. Part of the problem may be there is to many owners working there. To many chiefs and not enough indians. Workers were rush to work faster because I even heard them screming to employess I cant eat some where when they treat people that way. That is why staff changes so often there I believe.
