After reading previous reviews, I was excited to try this place out. I have to say my wife and I were disappointed. We ordered a pizza and it was terrible. The crust was so dry, the sauce was bland and only a couple sprinkles of cheese. We both ordered the house Chiante. It was very dry, bitter and hard to drink. I ordered the gnochhi. The texture was great, however, the saffron sauce was funky and had a weird after taste. My wife ordered a special, which was veal milanese, with a salad. She enjoyed that, but for the price (28 bucks), it better be good. Also, the bread was fresh, but not very good.
Totally Unexpected – You simply would not expect a little restaurant in a strip mall to be this good! My husband and I went here for Valentine's Day. I wanted to go somewhere nice, but not fancy - tasty, but not ridiculously expensive - popular, but not too frenetic. Fioretto fits the bill. I can't wait to go back... my risotto (and the service) was fantastic!
Decent Italian Food..if you like Chef Boyardee – My palette isn't as finely-honed in on Italian as other types of food, but I can certainly tell when a sauce is homemade or of the canned variety. My dish was not fresh by any stretch of the imagination and my buddy's sauce was like a powdered beef stew sauce.
The Best Birthday Ever! – I found Fioretto Trattoria on Citysearch.com because I couldn't get a reservation at the snobby restaurant I wanted to go to for my birthday. Fioretto Trattoria was the best place I could have picked. The food was fresh, flavorful and wonderful - I felt like I was back in Florence eating Osso Buco and Homemade Lasagna. They made a ricotta cheesecake with berries for my birthday cake and it was delectable. The chef came and chatted with us for about an hour after our meal and even took our picture for us and gave us a celebratory drink for my birthday. It was the most amazing meal I've ever had and I can't wait to take everyone back. This place is HIGHLY recommended and if you're looking for a quiet place to take your sweetheart or family, this is the best to choose from!!!
An Amazing Find – What an amazing find this restaurant is. But for a recommendation from a friend who appreciates good food and wine, we would never have expected to find such a treasure hidden in a modest mini mall in Culver City. Once inside, though, a quiet and tastefully decorated room, obviously done with care and taste, was a tip-off to what turned out to be a terrific dining experience. Chef/owner Dawn Gray 'Dave' Giani flat dazzled us, from his freshly baked bread to tasty salads to beautifully presented, exquisit entrees and finally, an absolutely extraordinary pannicotta esspresso granita dessert. All this for little over $30 apiece. Bravo. We'll definitely be back.
Seasonal menu offers a taste of Tuscany inside a Culver City strip mall. – In Short
Light green Venetian plaster walls and rustic lanterns hanging over wood-carved tables recreate the light and airy feel of a summer day in Italy. Servers treat patrons like lifelong neighbors, serving homemade bread and garden-fresh vegetables. Everyone from Sony execs to hardcore gourmands forage off the beaten path of L.A.'s trendy restaurant scene to experience this authentic cuisine. Paired with wines from Central Italy, the menu changes seasonally, but lasagna with noodles made from scratch works any time of year.
Do yourself a favor... this is a real find – The food is simply delicious, prepared by a bona fide, conscientous and talented chef. While the restaraunt is a simple storefront in a strip mall, they have done their best. Roughly twelve tables, nice lighting and artwork. Squint a little and you forget your surroundings. The food and the service are top notch. My wife and I simply adored a warm pear salad, her artichoke fettucine and my chicken marsala. Next visit, we had the same salad, she had a very tasty vegetarian risotto and I had the unique tuna spagetti. All of the food was noteworthy and, since we have a small, very cute baby in tow, we got to speak to all of the clientele. Everyone was VERY enthusiastic about this affordable and delicious restaurant opening in our neighborhood. Oh -- the few desserts are unique and wonderful as well.
a true gem! – My husband and I had Valentine's dinner here. We were tremendously impressed with the delicious, fresh food and the "no-hype" atmosphere. Also, the prices were very reasonable, especially considering the high quality of the food. The fact that it is family-run was also a nice change from all the corporate chains out there.
Addendum 5/6/05: I noticed another reviewer wrote that a con is there is no liquor license; they now do have a liquor license.
Valentino quality at a fraction of the price – This is truly the best and most authentic Italian restaurant in Los Angeles. I have been to them all. Chef David spends the extra time to make every dish to order. He learned to cook in Italy so that is the only way that he will allow the food to be prepared. The pasta in the Lasagna is fresh made. It is fabulous and unlike any lasagna that you have ever had. He tediously hand rolls the "pici" pasta for his Pici and Shrimp dish. You won't find this anywhere else. His homemade Mozzarella is the creamiest that you will ever taste. As a special on occasion he even makes fresh Burrata and serves it with a Tomato Coulis finished with Basalmic Vinegar. His soups are excellent. We have tried Tomato Bread Soup, Lentil and Garbanzo soups. His Italian Bouillabaisse is spectacular. They charge a nominal $10.00 corkage fee. The waitress is top notch and keeps on top of everything. She is as hospitable as she is professional. One dish not to miss the the Fried Calamari. They are not the least bit oily, the squid is so tender and the coating is light as a feather. This is one of my favorite dishes so I have had it all over the country but this is by far the best. If you have a chance to get a dish with Risotto make sure to do it. It is tediously made to order and that makes all the difference. The location is in a hidden away mini-mall but don't let that discourage you. I am quite confident that this will be your next favorite place. Even if I lived far away I would still make the drive to experience food this good prepared by a highly skilled Italian Chef.
