What People Are Saying About The Hungry Cat

Tucked inside the Sunset + Vine complex across the street from the Arclight, this casual spot is where pre-theater crowds and foodies head for a relaxed dinner (if you get here early enough). Matte black walls and a glass window stretch up to industrial ceiling fixtures, which lend a post-modern vertigo to the intimate space. The centerpiece is a wood and zinc horseshoe bar that wraps around the kitchen and raw bar. Husband and wife chef owners David Lentz (Campanile) and Suzanne Goin (Lucques, A.O.C.) proffer a sophisticated seafood menu inspired by dishes from the Maryland coast. For…

Editor's Tips

Where to Sit:
A charming courtyard patio in front is shaded by market umbrellas by day, and made toasty with heat lamps by night--it's great for larger groups.
What to Drink:
The wine list offers over 20 wines by the glass, and the bar whips up specialty cocktails with fresh seasonal juices, along with classics like dark and stormys.
The Extras:
Indulge guilt free: American sturgeon caviar is environmentally sustainable, as the eggs are harvested (by caesarean!) and the fish left to live, swim and spawn again.
What to Order:
The Hungry Cat is know for seafood, and especially crabs and oysters. The oysters here are top notch and expertly ordered by a staff who knows what is in season.
Parking:
Parking on the street near here can be difficult, but it can be done. Snag a meter on Vine but make sure you read the signs--even at night. You may park in the garage below (same as the Borders/Bed, Bath & Beyond bldg) and get validation, but it will cost you (free with validation to to one hour). $2 every half hour thereafter.

  1. There are a tremendous number of restaurants in this price range with convenient parking arrangements, friendly and professional staff that can make for an enjoyable evening out.
  2. I've owned 3 French restaurants myself, and have eaten in restaurants all over Europe, and America, but this one is the tops, great food, very innovative, great quality, and fun.

dessert
90.0% positive
  1. The food, from appetizer to dessert, was amazing.
  2. The chocolate bread pudding, the only dessert on the menu, was tasty.
  3. The caramel top was nice with the bread pudding and the chocolate bottom, but it would have been better with the brioche slightly wetter or possibly done custard style bread pudding.
  4. The crab cakes were superb and a perfect size if you want to nibble on something before or after a movie at the arclight.
  5. the crab cake is awesome, the yoda marinated fish is incredible (chages all the time), the one lone dish on the menu that is not seafood, The Pug Burger.

  1. Our waiter, Henry, was attentive, personable and gave very thorough information about all menu items including the wine list.

  1. While the food was quite good - the oysters, king crab legs, and blackberry margarita in particular were excellent - there's much to be sorted out here.
  2. Most memorable meal I've had in a while
  3. Everybody loved the food.
  4. I've never, on multiple trips, had a dish that was less than terrific at the HC.
  5. Let me tell you, it's hard to find a real and good crabcake these days, but I absolutely loved it, the garlic sauce that is on top- mmm, good stuff.
  6. The food was ridiculous, the service beyond helpful.
  7. I'm not a huge seafood fan, but what I have had here has been great.
  8. The beet salad (which is always a favorite of mine) was great, with its unusual combination of ingredients to please the palate.
  9. It's regrettable, but the memorable food still isn't worth braving the hassle and half-hearted service.
  10. The drinks here are great, with fresh juice that they have right at the bar.
  11. I've been to Hungry Cat several times and the food and service is consistently good.
  12. ... their raw oysters are always fresh and the selection is always interesting.
  13. It was nicely flaky and the squash had a slight pleasant mix of a crispy cheese and the pesto sauce wasn't overpowering, but fresh and herb-y.
  14. We wanted to try a new restaurant and were looking for a good seafood place.
  15. The flavor of the oysters was exactly what I expected and were served with a great vinegar and cocktail sauce.
  16. The cocktails are fresh and delicious, peel & eat shrimp is outstanding.
  17. However, the meal as a whole was a tad overpriced and, in the end, not really worth all the waiting we endured that night.
  18. It's awesome" -- not the most helpful response when the question is, "Does the salmon come with a heavy or light sauce?
  19. The food was cold and there was a hair in my wife?
  20. my food was good.
  21. have to admit, what Idid have was very good (crab soup and heirloom tomato salad), and the service besides the denials was very good.

  45. The food was decent but after all the bad service.
  46. The 'spicy' squid salad (it didn't seem too spicy to me, but I douse everything with Tabasco so I may not be the best judge) was a decent portion, the crab frittata was wonderful (and also an okay sized portion), but the oysters on the half shell were woe

  55. Absolutely delicious food.
  56. Tastes like a small but heavy tuna fish on toast, but with lobster.
  57. Great food.
  58. Braised clams and chorizo with garbanzo beans is awesome.
  59. Although a limited selection, but if you love seafood and have a sophisticated palate, you will love and enjoy every dish!
  60. There are so many other places to get amazing seafood and fresh oysters, this isn't the place to go.
  61. The waitress was very attentive and explained that the kitchen was small so therefore our food wouldn't come out all at the same time (I expected this based upon a previous review), which went a long way to mitigating the awkwardness of one person eating
  62. The dishes were interesting, with things on the menu like Skate fish and a phenominal Oyster Chowder.
  63. The crab cakes were superb and a perfect size if you want to nibble on something before or after a movie at the arclight.
  64. While the drinks are tasty, the food sucketh.

  66. But seabass was delicious and oysters were fresh and nicely presented.
  67. In the 10 or so times we have visited, the drinks were spot on (specials and on menu), service friendly and attentive and the food fresh and interesting.
  68. For an appetizer I had the peel and eat shrimp, which, though served cold, was tasty.
  69. A small fresh ciabatta roll with lettuce and red onion becomes the bed for a fist size hamgburger patty dripping with arterial bane, which I recommend you order medium-rare.
  70. However, they have always taken the cheese off of the fantastic burger every time I've asked.
  71. decided to order a soup and salad.
  72. Great seafood!
  73. While half of our party loved their dinners, the other half were unthrilled with theirs, and having to request bread several times before it finally arrived at the end of the meal didn't help matters.

  75. When asked how I would like burger cooked, I said what I meant, "well done, bordering on burnt
  76. Chorizo and mussel dish left one of our party with a "big bowl of grease" after he'd picked out all the sausage and shellfish.

  87. The food is delicious - the oyster selection was great and the hamachi was divine.
  88. The food and service were excellent, this place is one of our new favorites.

Eases you out of your comfort zone

by Jacqueline Domanus

I went to Hungry Cat with my bf last night. We started off the evening with a tray of assorted oysters. SO GOOD! The flavor of the oysters was exactly what I expected and were served with a great vinegar and cocktail sauce. We were feeling a little adventurous and decided to give the sea urchin a try which turned out to be pretty good. For the price I thought there could have been a little more "meat" to it but it was delicious none the less. I don't see myself ordering the sea urchin on a consistent basis but it could be something fun to order when are guests in town. For our main dishes I ordered the mahi mahi and my bf had the white fish special. Both of our entrees were fantastic! Each bite had wonderful flavor and texture. The mahi mahi is served with this coconut rice. The combination of the sweet and non-sweet flavors really worked well with each other. My bf was hooked on the white fish special with a squash puree and a tarragon butter sauce. We finished up the evening with the tres leches/fig compote cake which was so indulgent but hit the spot perfectly. All in all from the beginning of the evening up until the end we continuously were pleased with the level of service and the cuisine. We'll continue coming here.

Most memorable meal I've had in a while

by ireneszchow

The menu is small, which is fine because clearly they concentrate and do these few things well. My husband and I shared a very flavorful octopus starter that had a nice spike of spice. Our two entrees were completely different in tone and flavor, but both delicious: an earthy dish of nutty scallops served over smoked ham and beans; and a Southeast Asian-inspired dish of astonishingly juicy seared black cod with melon and green papaya slaw over a bed of coconut rice. Skip dessert. There were only two--a bread pudding that sounded too rich for us so we ordered a lemon parfait. It was an underwhelming lemon curd and cream, and our meal would have been better without it. Still, it was the best meal we've had in a while, better than our experiences at some supposedly top L.A. restaurants. We ate at the bar and the service was just fine. I highly recommend this restaurant.

The Hungry Cat such a dissappointment!

by flakeNYC

This place was a disappointment! First off, the place is incredibly loud. This is not a place to go to have a quiet conversation. They blast the music and you are wedged into a tiny little table with your neighbor practically in your lap! We were seated promptly, but waited 20 minutes to be greeted and to order a cocktail. By the time we ordered our food, another 30 minutes, and by the time the food arrived we were over this place! The food was cold and there was a hair in my wife?s chowder. The management at this place leaves little to be desired and the staff appeared to be overwhelmed. There are better places in LA with better service and food!

  • Pros: Good cocktails
  • Cons: Poor service, loud, food cold and management leaves little to be desired!
