What People Are Saying About Orris

Chef Hideo Yamashiro's Westside eatery is more casual than his flagship, Shiro: The open kitchen is a flash of stainless steel, and the tiny, green-tinted dining room is accented by understated jazz. Patrons linger over globally and locally influenced tapas served in sharable portions. The selection includes albacore lettuce cups, curry infused shrimp tempura and the chef's signature shrimp mousse-stuffed ravioli in shiitake mushroom sauce. Desserts include seasonal ice creams and sorbets.
Editor's Tips
- Parking:
- There's a small free lot behind the restaurant, and valet is offered Thursday through Saturday.
- What to Drink:
- There are about 20 wines--served by the bottle and glass--selected by the chef to complement particular dishes; corkage is $12. Beer and sake is also available.
- Know Before You Go:
- The whole deep-fried catfish with cilantro and ponzu may be the most requested dish at Shiro, but it's not on the small plates-only menu.

Orris Is a westside treasure!

I am picky and have traveled the world tasting the arts of various great chefs. Shiro, the master chef owner of this world class small plates restaurant is probably the most creative but rigorous chef of all.
This is light, healthy haute food that has roots in French and Japanese cuisine. It is not necessarily for the hamburger hot dog crowd, but if you love perfection, balance and hyper creativity that is neither flamboyant or fussy, but sublimely prepared and served, this is the end of the rainbow.
After eating at Orriss for many years, I had a soup that was a special. My wife says that when I put the first sip in my mouth I looked like I left the planet. I did. If you remember the moment in "Ratatouille" when the critic tastes the ratatouille and is transported back to his childhood - This was me except I was transported to all the lovely small restaurants I have eaten at in France and Italy.
I also loved the snapper capriccio and the sautéed mushrooms. Finished with flour less chocolate cake and a perfect cup of pressed coffee that put us both under the table.
Chef Shiro is my hero.
If you want a life experience that you can tell your grandchildren about this is the place you will find it. The staff seems to love working there and they are enthusiastic, friendly and really know their food. Now I am going to go dream about that soup!
YUM! Super delicious Japanese / French fusion, Very reasonable prices

Wow! Each time I come here, I enjoy it even more. Went over the weekend, and had to share what a fabulous meal we had: delicious goat cheese bites, perfectly fried anchovies, and sensational mushrooms & pork. Best of all, the entire meal for two (with more than a bottle of wine, and a cheese plate for dessert) came in right around $100, which I think is VERY reasonable for the quality of food. We didn't have to wait at all (got there early though) and thought our waiter was great. Overall, very highly recommended for dates or groups. The only drawback is that the tables are a little tight, but really, I think this is a great place.
- Pros: Fabulous food -- especially fish, good (reasonably priced) wine list, great value
- Cons: Tables are a bit tight, inside gets noisy
Rich Sauces and tasty food

Orris is The best fine dining experience one could enjoy. The food, service and atmosphere is absolutely superb. From the time you enter the restaurant, until you leave hours later, you are delighted in selections of fine food and french wine. I'm happy to see that after coming to Orris over the past years that the restaurant earned high rankings from Fodors.
My favorite new Japanese/French/Tapas Restaurant
by spafreak2008
Orris is a funky Japanese french tapa kind of a place. They have wonderful service and really tasty food. I love almost everything here. There are always a couple of specials worth hearing. The vibe is hip and friendly. I loved the tuna tartar and the fried chicken. I have never had a bad experience here. The servings are on the small side, but really good. It's a great date spot. All of my friends that I have turned onto this place really like it. and we have all been back.
- Pros: Delicious Food
- Cons: Servings on the smaller side
Good Japanese small plates
by martinikitty13
Orris is a Japanese small plates place located on a stretch of Sawtelle inhabited by Japanese businesses. It?s a small, cozy space where the focus is on the open and busy kitchen. Service is efficient and quick. The food was served quickly and were all quite good. I have to admit however that nothing was so extraordinary as to inspire me to come rushing back ? but it?s a nice place to eat and drink with friends if you happen to be in the area. It is quite crowded so reservations are recommended.
We shared a nice bottle of pinot grigio and had the following plates:
- cheese plate (nice selection of cheeses ? goat cheese, a creamy petite basque, etc. ? other than the goat cheese, they were quite mild. Pleasant but not great.)
- tuna tartare with warm crusty bread and seaweed salad (good, but I?m a bit tired of this dish; although the addition of the slightly sweet seaweed salad was a nice touch) ? they were however strangely stingy with the bread.
- Crab and cucumber salad (I really liked this one ? very fresh and sweet and light)
- Pork medallions (this was ok, not sure what it was but I didn?t really like the mushy texture and aftertaste of this dish).
- Seared foie gras over eggplant (I also really liked this one ? perfectly balanced in a wonderful, sweet sauce).
- Shrimp mousse ravioli with mushroom sauce (ok, but I was slightly underwhelmed).
- Quail over white beans (again, just ok).
- Fried chicken (pretty good, but nothing special).
The other reviews have been so phenomenal on this place. perhaps that's why I felt slightly disappointed.
