What People Are Saying About Gr/eats

Reminiscent of a high-end high school cafeteria or tiny commissary, this quirky spot is set back from the street on Sawtelle's restaurant row. Opened by the same duo behind the neighboring Giant Robot store and GR2 gallery, the menu is a hodgepodge of ethnic food, from teriyaki chicken and fish tacos to pasta and crepes. Expect to see a mix of passersby enchanted by its oddities, zine aficionados and disenchanted diners from the more popular restaurants with longer lines.

- Know Before You Go:
- The eatery serves soft drinks and iced teas only--no beer, wine or hard alcohol, and they do not permit you to bring your own.

Definitely worth trying!

I adore this place! It is such a cute place to go and eat. I have been here many, many times and each time I leave waiting to come back. My favorite dish is the tofu meatballs - a fantastic option for vegetarians. Although I have heard mixed reviews on the paella, I really enjoyed it. The tofu burger is yummy too. I have also had their agadashi tofu, but it is hard to get that wrong. Overall, the food is simple and portions are just what you need. I love that GR/eats isn't pretentious, but trendy at the same time. The wait staff is always courteous and prompt. Fish and other daily specials are great too!
- Pros: Trendy, but not pretentious, simple but delicious food
- Cons: None! maybe just the parking (but the parking is limited on Sawtelle- not their fault)
Great hidden find!

My husband and I have been here several times, and it is always good. It is a very cute, casual hole in the wall type of place. Do not be deceived by the appearance and the lack of people inside. It might not look as appealing as some of the other restaurants on Sawtelle, but you will be surprised by the food quality. The fried chicken is great, as are the tofu meatballs. But our favorite item by far is the tempura ice cream. It is definitely one of our favorite deserts! If you ever find yourself in the area looking for a good, quiet place to eat where you don't need reservations, give this place a try.
Tasty fried chicken!

I've never had to wait to sit down at this restaurant, and the waitresses are really nice (I've never had a waiter). If there is a wait, you can go next door to the GR2 store and shop around for electic Japanese toys. The fried chicken is amazing, and the portions are enough to fill.
- Pros: never had to wait to sit, reasonably priced, interesting menu
- Cons: very small parking lot in front.
Unique food, great veggie options

I love this quaint little diner in the spirit of Giant Robot. Great vegetarian options in a low stress atmosphere. We had the veggie meatballs which we delicious. Service was down home and super friendly. The special, which was the crispy shrimp salad with mango, was so delectable that I think I'll have a hard time finding a comparable salad. Very affordable and a very good experience.
- Pros: unique vegan and veggie options, tasty
- Cons: parking
Tastes Like Japanese Food Cooked by Caucasians

I had heard good things about Gr/eats, but this unfortunately was all hype. I had been looking forward to their mixed fries (potatoes, yams, and bananas), but it was mainly a plate full of french fries with a couple pieces of fried yams and bananas. I can get better fries at McDonalds for half the price. The tempura was way too oily and the dressing that came with the seared tuna salad was bland. I most likely will not return. Oh, prices are inexpensive, so the restaurant should have a "$" instead of "$$."
- Pros: Parking, No Wait, Inexpensive
- Cons: Mediocre Food, No Ambiance
