Editorial Review for Floyd's 99 Barbershop – by Mar Yvette
In Short
If the goateed barbers and flourescent-haired stylists don't clue you in to this salon chain's vibe, then the garage doors, blaring music and famed poster wall of rock heroes, movie stars and sexy sirens certainly will. With a spunky mix of retro charm (leather and chrome barber chairs, shampoo bowls at every station and the classic striped barber pole) and modern cool (internet stations and plasma screen TVs), the shop sticks to basic services like unisex cuts, blowouts and coloring treatments.
Hits: Prices are reasonable (about $20 for a basic cut) with each added service such as shampoo, blow-dry and styling priced incrementally.
Misses: Because haircuts are walk-in only, the wait can be agonizingly long, especially on weekends.

Nate is more than a stylist - he is your personal cheerleader, confidante, and pal for the whole time you are under his expert care. He makes your time in his chair fun while he asks all the right questions. I am touchy about someone saying they are just going to trim off the split ends....then they proceed to whack off about 5 inches! Not Nate - if you ask for a slight trim, that is what you get. He makes suggestions but does not impose his tastes on you. He is quick, too. Hip, relaxed atmosphere appropriate to Hollywood. Well worth the money.
Pros: Great results on a variety of styles - from green mohawk to librarian brown bob.
Cons: Street parking is a little tough in an area where every street considers itself entitled to Permit Parking only.

OMG, I hate this place. I went here three years ago and hated it then, but I guess i forgot and got desperate and went again. Everyone there is totally snotty, especially the girl at the front desk. Do NOT Believe the prices on the website -- once they are done with your cut/style/color/whatever, oops, it's $30 more because you have long hair/dry scalp/whatever. This was happening to the person in front of me while I was waiting to pay, then -- guess what -- same thing happened to me. How was the work? Sucked! I told the stylist I wanted my hair to be blowdried really full, and since it's naturally curly, that's easy to do (um...I can do it and I have no professional training). It was flat against my head, with no body when she was done. Also, how about some air conditioning, you cheapskates. It was 95 degrees out and I'm getting my hair blowdried --- even the stylist was sweating. This place was gross and does not deserve your business, unless all you care about is being uber-hip. That's all they care about, definitely not about providing good, friendly service at the quoted price.
Pros: on melrose - if you care about that
Cons: SNOTTY staff, bad stylists, HOT
