Worst bikini wax ever. I've been getting regular Brazilian bikini waxes for a long time. After moving to LA from New York recently, I decided to try out Exhale. I had the worst bikini wax of my life. The wax itself did not adhere well to the hair, meaning that the aesthetician had to go over the same spots multiple times, causing excruciating pain. Also, she didn't wear gloves, which was (a) disgusting and (b) incredibly painful since she would touch my inflamed skin with her bare hands, causing traction. My skin ripped in several places, causing bleeding and leaving small scars. The aesthetician also seemed unaware of basic ways to ease pain during the process, including applying pressure to newly treated areas and covering treated areas with a cold damp cloth to ease the pain and inflammation. Instead, she rubbed an oil into the treated area which just made my skin burn and hurt even more. The experience was so horrible that I couldn't even finish the procedure. After getting home I discovered that there were still fine hairs in areas where the aesthetician had applied wax multiple times. To add insult to injury, the waxing cost about twice as much as I paid at my last salon in Manhattan. I will NEVER go back to this place.
VERY relaxing massage....fastest hour ever. My boyfriend took me here as a valentine's day present and we were upset to find that they had double booked the couples massage room which he had reserved for us. They didn't have any openings the rest of the day at all, so we were forced to get two individual massages instead. We were disappointed at first that we couldn't have the couple's massage, but the massages we did receive were amazing. Every masseuse has a different technique so be sure to ask about that before you book. My boyfriend and I got completely different massages, even though they were called the same thing. The environment was really nice, minus the ceilings which looked kind of unfinished to us. And if you can't handle people without their clothes on, then this is not the place for you. Most people don't wear a swimsuit into the spas and walk around the same way, so beware of that. The unlimited use of the whirl pools and sauna with your massage treatment is definitely a bonus though. I would definitely go back.
Styrofoam cups, cheesy imposed design, and rude staff =(. < I must conquer with the review before me, the waiting area is co-ed with no warning! Though I was wearing a robe, a man was sitting there exposing himself until he realized there was a lady present (me), and turned bright red. There was visible mold in the spa, ickkkk. The "zen" ambience and philosophy of Exhale must only apply to oneself and not the Earth, because there were styrofoam cups lined up for the tea, and tons of wasted electricity in the spa- if this is a place for people who valet park their Hummer that gets 10 MPG so they can do yoga to better themselves, count me out. The font desk staff did not look up when I came in, at all. The only reason this review is getting 2 stars is because I did enjoy a lovely, challenging, but uplifting core fusion class with Jennifer, who made me feel so welcomed. If only she taught some where that will pay for biodegradable cups and clean the mold out of their showers, life would be great :)
Good massage, but what's with all the nudism?. I went here for the first time last nite for a corefusion massage (a Monday) and judging from the front reception/store area, I was impressed. It looked clean (although it did have a bit of that dank smell b/c of all the moisture from the spa) and the staff was friendly. Then ... I was walked thru the spa and it was like BAM! All of a sudden it was as though I had walked onto the island of Lessbos! (& i'm not saying that in a homophobic way WHATSOEVER.) Unclothed women all around, lethargically sprawled across the see-thru sauna, sauntering around the indoor pool area & giggling on (the only) chaise lounge. Now, I'm no prude (ok, maybe a little), but I have been to many a spa and not once have I encountered such overwhelming & overt nuudity. There weren't any weird vibes, but the clientele is not exactly friendly (no one smiled back except for the Mexican ladies cleaning up) and totally obnoxious (some girl was bragging LOUDLY about this 'fabulous casting agent' who called her). As for the massage ... well, that's another story. Even though it was less than the full hour I paid for, it was dreamy. It was stress-reducing (some of which was accrued in that poor excuse for a spa!). Plus, the room was relaxing and the massage bed was heated to perfection. ANOTHER POINT WORTH MENTIONING: I had no idea that the pool area's adjacent waiting area was CO-ED!! This should've been explained during the tour. Clearly, the other women who had booked treatments had no idea either because one had her boobies hanging out and a guy just sauntered in to pull up a seat! It was only when the guy's masseuse came by that the girl was told robes were required in the waiting area. I mean, HELLO! There should definitely be signs about this (although the place is so dark it might be pointless.) Between the unfriendly clientele, the rampant nuudity (i'm a germaphobe too) and surprise co-ed areas, I'm not sure the great massage is enough to bring me back.

GREAT waxing by Brig!. I see Brig (or Bridgette as she introduces herself) some where else for facials, and after a class at Exhale with my friend Kelly, I realized I needed a waxing, and so did Kelly! I didn't know Brig worked here- but not only is she a great facialist, her waxing skills are amazing. Quick, painless, and meticulous. Didn't think I'd be sold on switching to someone else for waxing (I usually go somewhere in NY). Class with Tim was great that day too.
I've had several therapists, Gina & Bridget are the best.
I'm an MD in Santa Monica, and I've been going to Exhale since it opened in Santa Monica.
The ambience is very zen, perhaps a little redundant in Los Angeles, but nice.
I have had massages from almost everyone, and facials from almost everyone and it is certainly hitand miss. Some of the therapists are fresh out of school and could use more work, but others, like Gina and Paul are truly talented and receptive to my needs, keeping me extremely relaxed while doing some deep, effective work. Marshey (sp?) is incredibly loving and euphoric in her touch, she seems to rub the stress right out of you.
Facials are more "my thing" than massage, I have major sun damage concerns and naturally want to fight off aging and wrinkles. I can say, hands down, Bridget is the most honest, educated, and effective facialist I've ever had. I can't stand facials where I'm being sold, and Bridgets reccomendations were honest and never sales pitchy. She even said "commission can't buy the integrity in my advice", which I found so honest and refreshing. I notice the biggest different after her facials, and she has an extremely nurturing touch that leaves this jaded doctor in a blissful daze. Lilly is rather good too- very sweet, and she truly cares about skin- and it shows in her own. I've never had a bad facial here, but I certainly have my prefferences.
Get there early for an appointment---there is steam, two hot tubs, great showers, and a cold plunge. I reccomend asking for therapists with experience, the front desk is pretty good at directing you to the right therapist if you're nice about asking for their reccomendations.
Park at the mall or in a Santa Monica structure. Don't bother with the meters unless you're only going to be there a short time, the parking enforcement in SM is strict.
BEST facial of my life- but cheesy facilities.
First the negative--- this spa has a very "imposed" zen style about it. The wording and ambience is clearly set up to promote inner peace and an Asian look, but it is done very cheaply, and the extremely policy-oriented Exhale conflicts with what the decor and mission statement would have you believe.
Positive: BEST facial from BRIDGETTE! She was amazing, and I have since followed her to Massage Therapy Center (less expensive and nicer facility). She give a very deep massage- if you don't like a lot of rubbing while masks are setting, then she won't be for you.
Deena (massage therapist) was sensational! I was happy with her as well, and will only go to Exhale to see her again. She made the trip worth it.
beautiful yoga studio.
ok, i have been to the spa and to several classes here. I think the spa treatments are just ok-burke williams is better. however, the facilities are beautiful.
the classes offered there are the true gem. Yoga room is beautiful and calming. the instructors are top notch and helpful for all levels
