Great little find!. My husband is into visiting anyplace that has a 'cocktails' sign. We have driven by S&S plenty of times without knowing what it was called or what was inside. On a Sunday evening we were driving back from Bev. Hills and I said to him, "just pull over so we can finally go in this place." We're SO glad we did! It was rather empty (one other couple) but we got to chatting with the staff and had a great time. Before you knew it, two hours had passed and the bar was rather full. We'll certainly return soon.
Best little bar in Culver City. I had my 30th birthday party here and we had the best time! The manager Ian was awesome, so accomodating and helpful - and my over 100 person party all had a fabulous time! Everything we ordered was tasty and we all loved the fire shows. This is my neighbourhood bar and I love going here, but after my bday party I've become even more of a loyal customer!!
Who are these people?. Tuesday's are a Riot! That "pierced fool" was hysterical and could do tricks like Tom Cruise. They play customers ipods and if you don't like a song you can scream and get it changed. I never waited long for a drink except when he and the other guy shot fire out of their mouths and that was worth it. It's one of the best bars I've been to!
Had a bad experience and haven't been back....
I always liked this spot; cool decor, attractive (if a little pretentious) crowd, just a fun hipster scene. That all went sour the last time we went. The bartender was noticeably drunk first of all. It took him several times to make my rum and coke (how hard is that?!) and had to keep asking what we had ordered. My friend was buying the first round. The total was $19 and all he had was a twenty dollar bill. He knew $1 tip wasn't cool but the guy HAD messed up our drinks several times, and that's all the cash he had. The drunken 'tender held up the dollar and was like, "Oooh thanks" and kissed it all dramatically. I'm sorry, but that is just plain rude and unprofessional...not to mention being drunk on the job.
It just left a bad taste in our mouths...or maybe that was the poorly mixed drinks.
Good music + affordable drinks + chilled/diversed crowd = Great Bar!. I went S&S this past Friday for a date, and I was pleasantly surprised at the place, the DJ spinned a good mix of music from hip hop to '80's rock, to new wave, so there is definitely something for everyone. Between my date and I, we had 4 Hell Fires (not as strong as I'd like, but, ain't so bad), 4 beers, and 4 rum & diet cokes, and the bill was for about $80.00, that's pretty damn good, in fact, UNHEARD OF in LA....well, Cozy's Inn in Culver City has cheaper drinks, but, the crowd there is a tad older and not as attractive. We were there from 730PM to 1230AM, and a mixed group of people were in there, you have your hippies-musician types, the smarties, the posers, and the ones that want to be seen...but, all in all, it was a great experience.
Culver City is coming up! Great Bar!. I went with a friend of mine to have a quiet evening one Tues night. Although we enjoyed how it was quiet around 9pm, for us to talk and chill out, as the night grew on- and the 'IPOD' night began- more people showed up, and we still had the BEST time! The bartenders are super cool and make good drinks- and the crowd is NOT pretenious- everyone is just out to have a great time. It is small- but for a date/ or small group of friends- perfect!
the place to be on the westside. To the person below, you are right about one thing: you and your friends may be the only people who feel that way about S&S. You sound like you went on a weekend, and on the weekends the place is crowded. It's a sign of a good bar. Anyone who doesn't like crowded bars should definitely avoid S&S on the weekends and come on the weekdays instead - although on some weekday nights it gets crowded too... I guess the place can't help but be popular ;) The music is definitely played loud and thank God for that. S&S DJs tend to play more obscure, under-the-radar music along with old classics, so if you go to the DJ requesting Fergie or some such nonsense, don't be surprised if you get a funny look. The crowd there is very particular about the music played - I've occasionally seen DJs get booed by the crowd for playing certain songs - so it's safe to say that if the crowd's letting the record play, they're into it. the staff are the friendliest, most entertaining bunch of folk you could ask for behind a bar, and the fireplace and lounge areas mean you have the choice to sit and mellow out with your folks or rage it out at the bar with the other lunatics. All in all, excellent spot as far as I'm concerned. See you there.
Hot, crowded, poor re-design, bad DJ, ultra-loud, long lines. I hated this place, even though it looks like my friends and I are the only ones that feel this way. When we went it was RIDICULOUSLY loud, and I like loud places. The DJ, while attractive, was not good at DJ'ing, it took forever to get a drink, there was no place to stand, & the fireplace coupled with all the people made the place unbearably hot. The layout of the place is also appallingly bad, with the result becoming a mass of people trying to fight their way to the bar - the place is tiny already, whoever thought of putting a half-wall 3 feet behind the bar should be flogged mercilessly. I'm all for nice spots on the Westside, being a Westsider, but go to Beechwood or The Brig or somewhere on Main street and skip the useless wait for such a poor payoff. Needless to say, we left after 20 minutes and walked to Ray's, a true Westside dive where the drinks are cheap and stiff and you can hear your friends talking to you without being drenched in sweat.
nice neighborhood bar. i recently went here with a friend and had a good time. it is cozy (small). the dj spins ok music. there is a nice fireplace by the door. there is a room off to the side when you don't want your converation drowned out by the music. there is also a small patio for smokers. the crowd is unpretentious. they make good drinks. i would go back.
Fun for the whole family - ok not for anyone under 21. Really, this is a place where anyone can come and feel comfortable. It's fun to stop by for a drink or chill all night at the bar. It does tend to get crowded, especially later in the night, but it's a blast. The staff is great there too. One of the ladies that works at the bar inspired my friends and I to get our tattoos!
