Editorial Review for Night – by Lynn Suhrie

The Scene
Like a haunted mansion, Night Hotel's pitch-black facade invites plenty of intrigue. At the slightest tug, the hotel's oversized door floats open to reveal a narrow lobby, Nightlife (a slick a la carte/tapas restaurant and bar), and a large black and white portrait of the Knights, a conceptual "family" meant to epitomize the effortlessly fashionable and oh-so-hip sort for whom this property was intended.

The Details
Although the color scheme is absolute, the gothic theme is more tongue-in-cheek than macabre. Smallish guestrooms (those with king beds are about 260 square feet), are decorated with monochrome bramble wallpaper and have chariot-style beds with 400-count Frette linens, plasma TVs, Bang and Olufsen audio-visual systems, executive-style leather chairs, narrow workstations, and Dean & Deluca minibars stashed under velvet-draped tables. The tiled bathrooms feature glass-enclosed showers and Molton Brown toiletries.

Nice idea, horrible outcome. Somebody tried way too hard and missed the mark. The black and white was dizzying. It was if I had stepped into the 1990's Heretic/Hexen video game!!!! The food was semi okay. The wait staff was annoyingly "forced friendly". Cannot fool a diehard New Yorker! After walking through the streets of New York and then almost missing the entrance you walk into something just as "black and white" as the street. Next time I'll stick to the soothing decor and wonderful ammenities of the Mandarin on 60th or the SoHo House located semi-downtown who has the world's most comfortable beds and comforters. They should have hired Cher to do the "gothic" interior design they were aiming for and they would have had a better outcome. Much too "black and white" for my taste. There is always a gray middle ground and they need to find it.

Pros: Logistically wonderful!

Cons: Everything Else

Hot..Hot..Hot!! This is a brilliant find! (You may miss it though while walking down 45th) Stayed here during fashion week as it was recommended by my colleage. The design is fab! not a place for the kiddies! The rooms are cozy. I stayed in a Queen room. Beds are super comfortable and the bath products are great. The restaurant has somewhat of a scene and the food is delish, try the fire and ice! The staff is super friendly and literally go out of thier way to help out. I had a problem with the AC one night and they kept me in the restaurant with glasses of wine until the the issue was resolved about 30 minutes later. They offered a room change but I wanted to give them an opportunity to redeem themselves. They did! You are a few steps from Times Square (once you are in the hotel you would never know it!) Not much a view from the rooms though..it took me a bit to find the window, but never the less I enjoyed my time at Night and I will be back!
