Editorial Review for The Island Hotel Newport Beach – by Mar Yvette
In Short
This 20-story, 295-room tropical-style resort is like a Tommy Bahamas ad come to life: Well-dressed 40-somethings amble among lush potted palms, fragrant fresh flowers and woven rattan furniture swathed in soothing sage and cream tones. Opened in 2005 (it was formerly a Four Seasons), the hotel features American-style cuisine at Palm Terrace Restaurant, a full-service spa, ultra-modern fitness center, two tennis courts, heated pool, whirlpool and views overlooking the Pacific Ocean and nearby islands of Balboa, Lido and Catalina.
Hits: Palm Terrace Restaurant boasts four floor-to-ceiling wine cabinets with over 1,000 wines, consisting primarily of boutique California vintages, New World wines and Tuscans.
Misses: As is the case with most hotels, parking is strictly valet--and expensive. It's $29 overnight and $12 for day use.
