Editorial Review for Bar Lubitsch – by Michael Martin
In Short
From bar czar Sean MacPherson (Good Luck, Jones) and Jared Meisler (former Bar Marmont manager) comes this red-drenched vodka bar and dance club--a nod to Russian decadence. A crowd of Sunset traditionalists descends on the boxy entrance and into a Bolshevik-chic playground of elaborate chandeliers, Mao-red walls and a sexy spin on communist-era uniforms strutted by the staff. Keeping elements of its predecessor that worked, the dance floor and bar are still in the same place, albeit with a much more elegant design.

I've been to this bar man times and never been treated so badly. I've gone for my birthday (2 years ago) and had a blast. I went one time after that and the music was too loud and I just left angry. Then this summer/fall we started hitting it up again lots after drinking at our favorite martini bar Lola's just down the street on fairfax. I had many a good time at bar Lubitsch...and then last saturday happened. My friend had a birthday dinner at Lola's and 8 of the guests decided to go to Lubitsch while me and a friend finished our drink and would meet them in 30 minutes. We get there probably about 10:30 and their is a short line outside - because our friend did not reserve a guest list in there we waited on the line outside. We looked fine - dressed up - there were maybe two or three groups in front of us - and the bouncer told us it was filled to capacity and he would try to get us in soon. Well first one group of his "friends" came to say hello and he let them in. Fine whatever....but this consistently happened - they would assure us they were filled to capacity and then they would let 5 more of his "friends" in. I understand the group he let in cause they paid him - I even understand a group or two of his friends - but when it gets to be upwards of 50 or more and he says that it is filled to capacity it is absurd. ABSURD. Finally 45 minutes later my friends came out and said it wasn't worth us being outside and them in. 10 of us drinking inside would have been a lot of gross on the bar - 10 happy people? no? so we took our business back to Lola's. When I spoke my mind to the bouncer dude in his stupid pansy a** corduroy jacket he said he was doing his best to let us in as they were filled to capacity bull....and I said you kept letting people you knew in - he gave some lame a** excuse...whatever bar lubitsch - you lost confidence in one ...don't know if I will be able to come back....as long as that pansy a** is still working there.
Pros: good pomegranite martini
Cons: horrible outdoor service

Gilded in our weekend best, my friends and I stopped by the well-respected Bar Lubitsch--something tells me it doesn't take its name from the tasteful, thoughtful films of Ernst Lubitsch, whose criticisms of Nationalist Socialist Germany (the n-word is prohibited) the bouncers could certainly learn from--to meet some more friends who got there before 10. We arrived around 10:30, and paramount to our quest was for with one member of our party to meet up with a potential female mate within the steely confines of the bar. Weeks of careful Facebook messaging had led to this moment. There were 6 people in front of us in line at 10:30, and though I was wearing a collared shirt from my summer job four years ago and my friend a sparkling pair of Asics, it seemed that, given the time and space within the bar, we would be in there opening tabs and spending dozens of dollars on drinks that I'm certain were overpriced. Sadly, I was never able to actually patronize Bar Lubitsch besides being an unattractive billboard for them. 12:15 rolled around--1 hour and 45 minutes we stood in line--and we were next, being lied to repeatedly by the bouncer that we would be in shortly. If not blinded by foolish Eros, we would have left an hour earlier and left to drink elsewhere, but no matter. We questioned why groups of guys--often without girls, and often with mohawks--were let into the bar willy-nilly. One member of our party peaced out after three douchenozzles with matching sweaters tied 'round their necks like Nantucket nancies were showed the way in--sans females!--while we steamed uselessly. It's not that we're pathetic people--I know and accept that it takes a certain kind of loser to wait in line for over 90 minutes on a Friday for a bar that, by all accounts, looks prime to disappoint. Despite my own shortcomings, I know that I am not a trio of fuckbuckets with sweaters tied round my neck. A truly abominable treatment of people looking to have fun on a Friday.
Pros: the weather was nice
Cons: the bouncing staff was awful
