In Short – Accenting the upscale artsy vibe of this rejuvenated Culver city neighborhood is this eco-friendly date spot, Sony exec lunch spot and organic haven for locals. Inside, polished blond wood and stainless steel exude modern warmth and huge plate glass windows bring the outdoors in. The wraparound sidewalk patio offers tables under fragrant Jacaranda trees amid herbs and vines. Specialties include big salads made with Scarborough Farms greens, gourmet soups, sandwiches and mesquite-grilled flatiron steak and free-range chicken.

Worst dining experience in years

by Devora at Citysearch

Went with a friend, got Chinese chicken salad, and flank steak plate, with "aguas frescas". Salad greens were not fresh, limp, some of the chicken pieces were a disgusting grey color. I don't like a lot of dressing on my salad, but even for my taste, the salad did not have enough dressing. Typically, Chinese chicken salads have almonds, they use cheaper peanuts. Also for the price, the portion was very small. The flank steak plate was a few small slices of meat, 2 small scoops of instant mashed potatoes and a rock hard stale piece of bread. My friend wanted soup instead of salad with his dinner, and had to pay another $2 for the substitution. The soup was ok, but for those health nuts, the chicken in the soup had skin on it. The "aguas frescas" are artificially flavored, over sweatened from mix. Fresca mean "fresh" in Spanish, and aguas frescas are supposed to be fresh fruit pulverized in water, lightly sweatened. Pineapple agua fresca should have small pieces of pineapple in the drink. If you want to try REAL aguas frescas, try El Gallo Giro (several locations in southern California), but be warned if you think the junk at Tender Greens is good, unless you are a Kool Aid or soda pop junkie, you won't like their drinks after trying the real thing. Final analysis: Overpriced, not fresh, poor quality.

  • Pros: Nice outdoor seating
  • Cons: Overpriced, not fresh, poor quality

The coolest seat is the cushioned banquette on the patio just outside the front door--it's shaded and off the street but still good for people-watching. A lovely rough hewn wood table with rustic benches is ideal for larger groups of eight to 10.
