In Short
Owner and CalArts grad Tai Kim approaches his daily ice cream, sherbet, and sorbet menu with the flair of an artist. Sometimes he'll take an old standby like strawberry and add a sophisticated twist, such as balsamic vinegar. He also creates his own original concoctions, like peppermint tiramisu, Lung Ching tea with ginger and vegan hazelnut espresso. The only consistently offered flavor is brown bread, which Kim makes out of Grape Nuts cereal and caramel.

Scoops is a gem of a joint tucked away in an unlikely part of the city. Just happened upon this place on a Sunday walk and couldn't be happier. I had the strawberry jasmine and absolutely loved it. The service was great and the gelato was delicious!

My husband and I had dinner at our favorite BBQ place in Koreatown recently and decided to try something different for dessert. We usually drive out to Al Gelato on Robertson Blvd. but this night we had some friends with us and decided to try Scoops in Koreatown. What a gem box this place is!! It was a bit crowded with LACC students on Saturday night but all four of us were able to try little scoops of the most of the amazing flavors: Brown Bread (like old-fashioned bread pudding), Jim Beam & Chocolate, Orange Jasmine, Salty White Chocolate...and so many others that were just as incredible and inventive. I had read on Citysearch that Scoops sometimes has a flavor called Bacon Caramel that we were excited to try but, alas, it wasn't there. I think half the fun of this place is the surprise of what flavors they do have from night to night. What a bargain, too - we each had 2 scoops for under $12. Next time you're near Koreatown make sure you save room for dessert!

Don't be afraid to try the wild flavors, or to try the vegan flavors. They are ALL good!!!! And if you are feeling shy, they are super nice about letting you taste any of the flavors first. I love the way the owner uses unique ingredients like goat cheese, basil, bacon, guinness, etc... and the ice cream still tastes awesome. It's very reasonably priced as well. I don't think I could recommend this place more! Also, If you're up for a meal before your ice cream, I recommend Pure Luck (an awesome vegan restaurant) right across the street. You'll be full and happy afterwards :)
