STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM THIS PLACE OR BE ABUSED

I came to the Redwood bar for a hiphop showcase on January 9 and was having a great time enjoying the music with my friends up until just before the show ended. Before leaving I decided to use the women's restroom and upon flushing the toilet began to overflow. UnfortunatelyI didn't realize until after I used the toilet that there was water already on the floor but I had to urinate pretty bad so I had just went. I felt bad about causing the toilet to overflow so after noticing a plunger next to the toilet, I decided I would try and stop the flow, when I heard someone banging on the door. I exclaimed that I would be out after plunging the toilet but the banging persisted so I stopped plunging, washed my hands and opened the door to be rudely addressed by a man who I thought was a plumber and a well-fed "security" guard. Immediately the man I thought was a plumber(later found out he was actually the owner but I find that questionable) began shouting that I wasn't supposed to be in there and that they had put up a barricade to block off the restrooms(I wouldn't really call it a barricade though because I walked right to the restrooms without noticing anything obstructing my path). Attempting to explain myself was useless because the owner immediately started shouting and mocking me for going to the bathroom even though it was supposedly blocked off. He proclaimed that I was drunk when I was perfectly coherent but had no opportunity to speak because every time I tried to say something I couldn't because he was talking over me so I slapped him. I was angry about being yelled at for attempting to plunge their toilet and not being able to speak at all. It wasn't a hard slap but definitely a foolish decision, on my part, to get his attention. Verbal abuse then turned into physical abuse because unfortunately violence usually tends to create more violence. The owner threw me to the ground and proceeded to kick me about 5-10 times while I attempted to get up over and over, sobbing that I was just trying to plunge the toilet. While this was happening, the "security" guard was shouting down to me that he was going to call the cops on me. I continued to struggle until the guy eventually stopped kicking me and let me go. I left the place crying hysterically and definitely looking like a drunk so I didn't file a report because I did not need a drunk in public ticket as well as verbal and physical abuse all in one night. I am a firm believer that through karma, justice will be served.
Owner seems to like pretending he's a satisfied customer

After reading the other reviews on this Jazz club, I realize that "Disgusted" had an excellent point. I noticed that many of the reviews for this place on other sites were placed on Oct. 6, 2007 and that they all used a lot of the same phrasing, like the place is "like home" or "homey" and that the service is "warm and friendly."
I've never been to this club, but I find it extremely misleading that the owner feels the need to put up many, many fake reviews. If the place was great, he wouldn't need to.

I went to this place recently on a friday night. They have live jazz music, the musicians were great. However, the place is horrible. They were kicking people out of their tables to make room for others. In addition, they were charging for a 'cover charge' to sit at the table, which was not stated anywhere outside. You can walk in, sit down, have a drink. But when you try to leave, they'll throw on a $10 cover for each person, EVEN if you already bought drinks!!! And you see this guy walking around arguing with customers who were not aware of the cover charge. They get sneaky by saying that if you're at the bar or don't sit down, then there's no cover. What a shady establishment.
The most pathetic part about this?? The guy who wrote the positive review "birdlandman" is surely related to this place because this place is legally called "Birdland USA", as shown on my credit card and yahoo.
Do a search on Bird Land USA Inc Los Angeles and you'll find that its the alias for this joint.
ISN'T IT PATHETIC THAT A GUY HAS TO WRITE A POSITIVE REVIEW ABOUT HIS OWN PLACE AND LIE TO CUSTOMERS? STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. I'D RATHER GO TO THE CORNER LIQUOR STORE.
- Pros: Great Music
- Cons: Everything Else. Shady Establishment.
Best All Around Music Venue (Named #1 Jazz Club by the People of L.A.)

Second Street Jazz, located in the heart of Little Tokyo Los Angeles has some of the best music in town. The staff is warm and friendly, while the music is awesome. What I like about the venue is that it is very intimate. The stage is right there and you can feel the music.
They have awesome food, especially the Soys Sauce Chicken, awesome! Don't forget about the drinks, especially the Lychee Martini, the best I ever had!
- Pros: Awesome music and Drinks!
- Cons: Mostly paid parking
