Never again.

The store next door is o.k. They really do have so many things that you can't find anywhere else. The 'cafe' however, is a catastrophe. The food is incredibly expensive, served with attitude, and it takes forever. You'd be better off going to any other place in the area. Don't wast your time.
- Pros: can't think of any
- Cons: bad service, bad food, overpriced
Very Good Haute Dog!
by arcamp83 at Citysearch
I tried the Haute Dog here after reading a write up about best hot dogs in Los Angeles, and have to say it was surprisingly good, especially considering I don't really care for sausage. The sandwhich was delicious and had the smokiest venison sausage on a fresh panini roll. It was garnished with sauted red onions, blue cheese cream, and dijon mustard. I was skeptical at first but truly enjoyed every bite, and that is saying a lot as I am 2 months pregnant and have very finicky taste buds right now. I also got a chocolate cupcake with white frosting and a fuschia flower on top. It looked better than it tasted. Anyhow, I am excited to go back and try some of their other menu items because that Haute Dog was impressive!
Oh and about the cafe itself, the staff seemed very nice and welcoming, however I was a little confused after I ordered because there wasn't a designated place to pick up food and it was a little crowded inside the cafe, a little chaotic. However after I received my food I found a nice quiet table on the patio to enjoy my meal.
- Pros: reasonably priced, great taste
- Cons: a little chaotic
Avoid the Cafe and Head Straight to the Store

I LOVE the Surfas store yet I am constantly disappointed with the food I eat at their cafe. Perhaps it is because I have such high hopes thinking that a wonderful store should make great, tasty food. Instead the food is below average.
Yesterday I had the macaroni and cheese. I got to choose from toppings of bacon, bread crumbs or leeks. I chose bread crumbs. They were finely ground and piled on the mac and cheese- DRY. Imagine taking a spoon filling it with dry, ground bread crumbs and putting it in your mouth. It was awful. Underneath the bread crumbs the macaroni and cheese was bland. With their great selection of cheese displayed at the counter, I was hoping for a delicious blend of them in the dish. Instead I got insipid mac and cheese.
On another day I ordered what they call the ultimate grilled cheese sandwich. Ultimate should be reserved for an amazing grilled cheese. This one missed the mark be a long shot. Sure they used good ingredients, the bread and cheese were tasty, but then they missed the mark on the preperation, completely. They grilled it on a panini machine without any oil or butter and the cheese was served to me cold and unmelted. Changing the name to cheese sandwich would be a good move, going around the corner to the new hot dog stand Lets Be Frank would would be a better move.
