Editorial Review for BLT Steak – by Martha Burr

In Short
Ghosts of Frank Sinatra, Gregory Peck and Julia Phillips may still be lingering over the legendary old Le Dome space, but they're making room for the contemporary Hollywood elite who now fill their reupholstered VIP booths. The name stands for Bistro Laurent Tourondel, not the sandwich, and it's a sister spot of the chef's acclaimed New York flagship. A crush of young Armani-clad agents, "ER" heartthrobs and pop star wannabes punctuate the caramel-toned banquettes and Macassar ebony tables, but the bustling see-and-be-seen lounge at the entrance and long raw bar showcases a lot more meat than the Black Angus and American Wagyu steaks Tourondel dishes up. Sweet, plump Kumamoto and Malpeque oysters may not be needed for romantic persuasion after a few potent cucumber gin cocktails, but go ahead, indulge.

Hits: This sophisticated notch in the Sunset Strip's belt isn't gloomy or overly clubby despite its steakhouse moniker, and the seasonal bistro menu items--as well as the raw bar--give diners lighter options.

Misses: The bar scene on weekends is hectic, so get there early if you want to get a seat. And just forget about getting a last-minute table reservation any night of the week.

The covered sidewalk patio overlooks Sunset Boulevard and is a great way to escape the inside bustle, especially on weekends.

The Extras

A spacious, elegant back room adjacent to the wine vault seats up to 20 guests for private events.

What to Drink

The wine list is impressive and features a dozen by-the-glass selections. Signature cocktails like the rhubarb mule have spa overtones with an underlying kick. The beer selection is also noteworthy, featuring Avery White Rascal and AleSmith Anvil.

Very disappointing. New York Strip took an hour and arrived totally cold and tastless, out of the 6 of us three had to send the steaks back. Manager claimed to be "new" which really doesn't remedy the situation! Won't be going back, don't suggest you try it. Waste of money.

We ended up at BLD instead of BLT. When we called to fix our mistake, BLT was very pleasant over the phone and encouraged us to come right over. We did and were seated immediately. We had a very attentive waiter with wonderful information about the BLT menu. However, the steaks were extremely disappointing! Think tender "HOT" meat! Utterly tasteless. We ordered the Rib Eye steak @ $45 and also the Braised Short Ribs both meats were tasteless! But tender! Crab Cake tasted like potato salad no crab taste. The tuna tartare however was pretty good. And that wedge salad was sub standard. All and all it was a pretty disappointing experience and we all wished we had stayed at BLD and given them a try especially since they boast a completely fresh menu daily. The Birthday Girl! was pretty disappointed with the meal and If you want a truly wonderful steak restaurant experience, MASTRO'S is the place to try! Needless to say, we won't go to BLT again.

Pros: Good Service - Very pretty restaurant

Cons: Bad Food - Too Expensive
