terrible service, great local place, mediocre food, favorite restaurant, overpriced opinion, love strawberry shortcake, bad waiter

Brunch & dinner spot. Outdoor seating and fluffy lemon ricotta pancakes that wow. Burger with Roquefort, Swiss and onion relish is outrageous
Not for lunch, or for that matter maybe not for dinner either.
BRUNCH REVIEW:
I've had dinner here several times, and it's always been great food with great atmosphere- especially since they've expanded into the bar next door. Their meat dishes are delicious and just about everything we've ordered has been great ... BUT ... based on these prior experiences we recommended M&A's for our family's brunch last Sunday with 7 of us celebrating my husband's birthday. Everything started off well enough, unfortunately, our waiter all but disappeared after the drinks arrived. My tea had two ice cubes which melted almost immediately, and I tried for at least 15 minutes to get our French-accented waiter's attention only to be continually ignored. Another server finally overheard me and brought a glass of ice. Once our meals arrived, the waiter was again AWOL, and we had a major issue with our corned beef hash- there was hardly any ACTUAL corned beef in the dish!! Maybe a fleck, maybe two, but not nearly enough to justify such its grand description on the menu. It was glorified hashbrowns, at best.
Needless to say, my South Boston Irish father-in-law was outraged told the waiter so once the guy the reappeared (at the very end of the meal). Our complaint was met with a half-hearted apology and a promise that the "chef has been informed," and although this could have been easily remedied by removing the item from our bill (or at the very least comping a dessert for my husband's birthday) the server did nothing to make things right. The item remained on the bill -- and no one even bothered to wish us a Happy Birthday.
Overall, just a terrible experience! The service stunk, lunch was average, and the menu misleading. Really crappy job Mike and Anne's, unless you step it up and take better care of your customers we won't be returning.
Best breakfast in South Pasadena. Mike and Anne's has the best breakfast in town. Pancakes are yummy. Cooked my eggs perfecttly and I am fussy. Love the atmosphere inside and outside eating. My favorite restaurant.
Great local place to start the weekend.
This has become a regular place for my husband and I to meet while our daughter is at her writing tutor's. We'll often share a couple of appetizers at the bar and check in with each other. Unfortunately, I cannot recall the dishes we've had--drawing a blank.
We've take friends from out of town to show off a bit of South Pasadena, and everyone has been satisfied with the service and the food. And these are people from San Francisco and Chicago, who like to eat well.
So, I recommend it! As for service, I have had no problems, personally. Perhaps because we are regulars? Don't know.
ok food and TERRIBLE service. My wife and I went to Mike and Anne's Restaurant for breakfast on a recommendation. Remind me to sm@ck around the source. Anyhow, we get there around 10am and were sitted promptly, then our "slick" waiter comes over thinking he was impressing us with his french accent... WRONG!!! We placed our order and about 25minutes later our food comes out and is wrong. It took them 10 mins to correct our order. Mind you this whole time our waiter has not come back to our table, I eventually had to flag him down just to get refills of water. We even had to walk our own check up to the front because we got tried of waiting for someone to come pick it up. The food is ok and the service is terrible. This resturant is walking distance from my home but needless to say I will not be coming back.
mediocre food and service. My husband and I have been wanting to try Mike and Anne's since it opened. Finally we got the urge to stop by last Wednesday -but what a disappointment. (and we were really hungry too) The salad I ordered had lettuce so wilted it was almost not a solid form anymore. $6 for a plate of unedible lettuce? His corn bisque was oily and watery. The braised short ribs were OK, but in our opinion overpriced and just mediocre tasting. The veggies were tastless and really undercooked. Overall, the only thing we enjoyed was the outdoor seating and the bread. Definitely won't return, even though the outdoor patio is perfect for summer evenings. What a let-down.
Good Food Poor Service. I guess most of the reviews have done a pretty good job of describing the place, the food was ok,the service is definitely slow and Lazy and on top of it the waitress ended up spilling whole tray of water over one of us. Overall it is at a good location and would be good place to eat on sunny day but by the amount of time they take to serve you will end up spending a lot of time for some average food
Worst Service in Southern California.
This place has problems. I showed up at the time of my reservation only to be told that is the restaurants policy not to honor reservations. I thought it was a joke, but it wasn't. I could not ascertain why they take reservations if they do not honor them. I didn't eat there since it was going to be a thirty minute to an hour wait past my so called reservation time.
The first time I ate there, the service was horrible. I thought maybe I just had a bad waiter, but it really is just a bad place. If you go here on a busy night, prepare to wait a long time for mediocre food served by a bitter wait staff. The outdoor seating area looks nice. Don't be fooled by the looks. There's nothing nice about being treated like dirt.
WORST SERVICE - Totally Ignored. We were really excited to try this nice looking restaurant right in our new neighborhood. We recently moved to South Pasadena. We got there and were seated very uneventfully, the rest of the time there was just that, uneventful. We sat there 25 minutes without anyone asking us what we would like to drink, eat or nothing. It's like we weren't there. The servers and runners deliberately avoided making eye contact. Maybe it's coz we were in the corner, maybe coz mentioned we wanted to have dessert and drinks, or maybe it's coz we're black, who knows? All I know is that it was humiliating and I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND this restaurant to anyone. I could not leave without letting someone know of our disappointment, so I did mention this to a lady that looked like the manager/owner on our way out.
They have Pumpkin Guinness Beer Ice Cream In October.
I am from the NYC and am always in La every October (Love the Santa Monica Costume Party) a friend took me to this restaurant last year... I am back in la again and can?t wait to dine there again this week end. They make a pan seared ahi tuna to die for. With a dessert special that was out of this world Home Made Organic Pumpkin Guinness Ice cream. OMG. I went there twice before returning to NY
I Hope they have the Guinness Ice Cream Again This Year... Cross My Fingers!
From a local's point of view. My family and I recently discovered this place, and I recommend it highly. This is where we take guests when they come to visit if they want a delicious but not fancy meal. The service is always friendly; in fact, one waiter remembered us three weeks after our last visit! The decor is tasteful and somewhat casual--I'd take a date to a corner table inside or on the patio, as these are the more private areas. The entrees are fresh and use interesting ingredients (forbidden rice, for example). One or two items on the menu change from time to time depending on what is available, but my favorite dishes are the heirloom tomato salad, the cod with miso broth, the tuna poke, and the burger. The desserts are pretty tasty, especially the peach trio. I happen to love the strawberry shortcake, but I can understand why one of the other reviewers wasn't crazy about it: it is a bit mild. In the end, I'd say this is a great place for a casual dinner with friends, especially if you're like me and you live in the area.
