The younger, more modern sibling of Pottery Barn offers sleek furniture and decor for the home or office. Think shiny surfaces (like lacquer desks in seasonal hues), organic bedding and mid-century inspired accents.

I shopped at west Elm last weekend and I think they have an interesting store. I don't think the quality of the furniture is all that great though with the possible exception of the bed frames. I did not feel that the sofas were well made and their selection of lighting and accent pcs. was limited. I was looking for a dining table and they have good simple designs, well priced, but they don't feel like they will last. They have excellent accessories, reasonably priced. The store looks good, the people are friendly but i don't feel the salespeople really know design and I guess if you keep it simple for people thats ok. I'm not that simple.lol
- Pros: good looking designs, nice atmoshere
- Cons: cheaply made, clerk type staff
Fabulous customer service, great selection

I favor designer furniture from places like DWR, but I have to give props to West Elm for their impeccable customer service and highly affordable prices for modern decor. The Parsons line (named after the school in NY) is always a good bet (the desk is great). I like how the store changes their color scheme with the season. So if you like something in a certain color, get it then cos even though the same design will likely be there next season, the color will be different. Parking here totally reeks, but the friendly people working there make you feel welcome, even if you're just browsing.
- Pros: Excellent customer service, selection is good
- Cons: Parking around here is NOT user-friendly
