In Short – Founded in 1973 by a group of teenagers, this non-profit organization offers sustainable solutions to urban ecosystem troubles. The group trains and supports communities in planting and caring for trees on school campuses, city streets and in the mountains surrounding Los Angeles. In addition, the earth-friendly bunch educates people about the environment and encourages government agencies to capture, clean and store rainwater in response to critical water issues.

My boyfriend and I planted trees at the Madrona Marsh in Torrance with treepeople and it was a really nice time. We had to leave early and no one gave us a hard time--good, low pressure situation. It's a really fun thing to do with the kids, friends or alone for a good sweat in the sun. I haven't done the full moon hikes but I'd like to!
- Pros: Great, low commitment way to volunteer
The Details on TreePeople
When to Go:
Every month from summer to fall there is an hour-long full moon hike in Coldwater Canyon Park. For just $5, these guided tours only happen when the man in the moon shines the brightest.
The Extras:
With a contribution of $25 or more, TreePeople will plant a tree and send a card to the family or person you designate. If you contribute $100 or more, TreePeople will plant a grove of five trees and send a certificate to your designee.
