Hokusai

New Hot spot for Japanese, French and Sushi.

  • Happy Hour 5:00-7:00pm
  • Lunch T-F 11:30am - 2:30pm
  • Dinner T-Sun5:30pm-Close

Hokusai offers an intimate alternative to the hustle and bustle of La Cienega's restaurant row. Sleek, stylish and dedicated to attentive service this establishment caters to singles, dates, local professionals or just anyone who wants a good meal.

Acclaimed executive kitchen chef, Charlie Nagase, and executive sushi chef Koji Matsuzaki create tantalizing dishes with European flair while remaining rooted in Japanese tradition. The freshest sushi available in LA is offered along side mainstays for the more traditional palate which include everything from Saikyo Foie Gras (sauteed with eggplant) to Jidori Chicken (grilled with spicy yuzo kosyo sauce) and a rib eye served with jalapeno butter and veal soy sauce.

Last but not least, the bar menu will not disappoint. A great place to grab a delicious not-too-sweet cosmo or choose from our extensive wine list.

Editorial Review for Hokusai – by Martha Burr

The Scene
This sleek deco building opens into a modern space featuring banquettes set with white-linen tablecloths and masses of roses and orchids lining the high wraparound windows. A gleaming open kitchen blends contemporary style with European elegance, offset by artsy Japanese touches like giant, blurred photos of autumn trees and nature. A busy industry lunch crowd lends afternoon energy, while evening locals set a casual, refined atmosphere, punctuated by cool world-beat jazz.

The Food
With chef and owners sporting Matsuhisa/Sushi Roku pedigrees, there's no mystery to the beautifully presented sushi and Japanese-French food. The hamachi is a knockout--perfect yellowtail slices dotted with fresh chile and yuzu oil. Daily sashimi specials straight from Japan, like premium mackeral, are a must. One off-menu specialty is an ethereal tempura-fried uni wrapped in fresh shiso; other fusion items like the bland truffled lobster can be uneven. The true destination dish is Kobe cheek stew--it's unctuous and mouth-melting in a divine red wine veal reduction.

Hits: Beautiful, elegant spot off Restaurant Row's bustle is hip and elegant--yet also quiet and romantic--and offers premium fish and excellent service.
Misses: Prices are high; a few fusion items sometimes fall flat, like the flavor-less lobster truffle and an over-baked crab cake.

I'm not a "foodie" but my dinner at Hokusai was the best meal I've ever had. I had the omakasi-- the fish was fresh, there was a french onion soup dish... just spectacular!

food is marginal. not great. better sushi in other places. service not so bad. waiters should be more in touch with the sushi community more so then just a hobby for them.

Pros: service

Cons: food
