Famous for its Batali-Silverton super-chef connection, this instant restaurant success remains one of L.A.'s most sought-after reservations. Right next door to sister eatery, Pizzeria Mozza, with window views looking out onto bustling Melrose Avenue, the high-ceilinged room is elegant in a modern way--think deep earth tones, leather banquettes and giant wooden wine racks. It's dominated by the vibrant marble mozzarella bar frequently manned by Silverton herself. The laidback and noticeably courteous clientele is a reminder of the difference between Hollywood's true foodies and straight-up scenesters. The former revel in Osteria Mozza's passionate cuisine and wildly comprehensive selection of Italian wines--even seasoned wine-lovers will most likely seek suggestions from the friendly sommelier. Batali's genius and Silverton's imagination meld to offer a vibrant menu that is at once rustic and robust, sophisticated and complex. Regional dishes include ribollita, a traditional hearty Tuscan country soup, and testa, a fragrant, subtle, delicate head cheese sliced paper thin, offset by green olives and oregano. The mozzarella bar offers a dozen stunning creations like the asparagus burrata with brown butter and guanciale (bacon), or the burricotti--a ricotta-filled burrata topped with tender artichokes, pine nuts, currants and mint pesto. Handmade pastas include francobolli--a "postage stamp" filled with rich braised short rib and thyme--and the wildly popular Egg Raviolino with brown butter. The ragus, especially the oxtail with Maltagliati pasta, are hearty and flavorful without being too heavy. Quail-wrapped in pancetta is grilled until the fowl and bacon fuse, resulting in moist, tender meat and all-around deliciousness.

We had reservationss for noon and were seated after about 4 other parties who were waiting for the doors to open. We sat a while before our order was taken, then sat a while more before our appetizers arrived. Our meal finally was served at 1:00. I know it's difficult for restaurants to serve everyone promptly when parties are seated within a few minutes of each other, but we were not happy. Fortunately we weren't in a rush but waiting that long for food that was good but not all that special made for a disappointing experience.

On my third visit to Pizzeria Mozza in the past year, I was incredibly unimpressed with the staff. Clearly, no one here has been schooled in customer service and civility. From the valet, to the maitre d's to the bartender, everyone seemed more concerned with how fast they could get you in and out than with the overall customer experience. The food is good (but not outstanding - and there are many better picks in LA), it's not worth the attitude or lack of graciousness from the staff. I could recommend at least ten spots in LA that are defintely worth your time and money. Don't waste it at Pizzeria Mozza. It's overcrowded, overrated, and full of tourists who think they're on to something hip. About a year too late.

How many of you have gotten this restaurants "we dont have any reservations available except 5pm and 10pm?" ... well I can say I have gotten this everytime I have called. I call horse pucky. I am in this business and know that there is not any way this restaurant is COMPLETELY reserved months in advance. I wish them luck with their 15 minutes and hope they have a plan beyond this common "lets pretend we are oh so popular" restaurant game. This is only going to work for them for so long. These New Yorkers will soon learn that Los Angelinos have a long memory.
