mediocre cut, great salon, bad roots, more expensive disappointing cuts, terrible bangs, recommended place, good colorist
Not a fan, won't be returning.
My first impression of Ali was when my boyfriend walked in and got his hair cut there a while back and I was really impressed with the cut. He went back a second time, however, and the cut was mediocre, at best. My boyfriend hasn't returned and I was surprised at how low the quality of the second cut was.
Ali had been bugging me for months to let him cut my hair for 'free' so I finally made a haircut appointment with him. When I came in, he immediately started hounding me about needing to get my highlights done. Yes, I had bad roots, but I didn't have the money or time to spend at that point, which is why I only wanted a haircut. He wouldn't stop insisting I come back for highlights and went as far as to tell the highlight lady that I would be coming back the following week - even though I never agreed. I just felt like he was really pushing that when I was just there for a haircut.
So, the haircut itself was.. meh. I asked for bangs and I felt like he expected me to tell him how to do it - even tho he's the professional! When he was styling my hair, the bangs looked terrible and we actually got into some what of an argument because I was so upset with how badly he was styling my hair. He ended up charging me $50 for the haircut, proclaiming what a great deal it was - even though he'd previously told me over and over it would be free. I felt really uncomfortable the whole time and he was really grumpy; he kept complaining about his problems and I just felt like, overall, he was letting that affect his work.
Less than a week later, I got my hair cut and styled elsewhere in Westwood and LOVED it. The guy was familiar with Ali's work and said he gets plenty of customers complaining about Ali. He was able to totally turn around my haircut and my bangs/layers around the face now look GREAT. I will not be returning to Ali again.
LOve this Great salon. After several more expensive disappointing cuts in LA my actor friend recommended this place. It is a no fuss salon, they serve coffee or water. Specialize in cuts, color, hi-lites, extensions. I think I've had almost every service offered. $90 for hi-lites and $55 for a cut I find very reasonable. A little higher priced than the average student salon in the area, but well worth the service. Many of the clients are Doctors, lawyers, entertainment professionals. One woman I met drives from Palm Springs just for her hair. Now thats a good colorist. The owner Ali charges more than the other stylists so book with them early in the week as weekends are hectic.
