view & uploadgood food, good beer, wonderful pub atmosphere, friendly bartender, beautiful neighborhood bar, overpriced food, great drink
Best burger in town, according to me. Truffled grilled cheese on thick cut bread is a revelation. Both go great with a local brew on tap.
Can't pour a proper pint. These guys do not know how to pour beer. So as to save money they will pour you a pint from a pint glass they they served earlier. Plus there beer is flat. To get a proper pint you need to go to the Verdugo.
Great Music On Wednesdays!!.
Along with a great beer selection they had an awesome DJ. The place was jumping and the drinks were flowing. It has a chill atmosphere and everyone seemed to be having a good time. I'm so jazzed the DJ will be back tomorrow on the 22nd.
You'll probably see me there drinking my fav beer cask ale and dancing in my seat!
Cool Place but questionable food. Great place, great vibe, hip people, but really bad chicken wings and over priced fish and chips that were all batter and no fish!
Cool vibe. Very cool vibe. Relaxed, intellectual hip feel. Great selection of interesting beers and wines. Appetizers are unique - truffle grilled cheese; a selection of olives, mixed nuts and fried garbanzo beans; etc. I want to go back and try out the brunch! Not sure about the neighborhood, but there was plenty of activity in the evening due to other restaurants and the nearby college so we felt safe walking to our car.
Best local Bar. Best local bar in Highland Park/Eagle Rock area. Super friendly bartenders (if you aren't in there to order an appletini or irish car bomb), and a solid and consistantly exellent menu of gourmet food. Normally i wouldn't pay $12 bucks for a burger but it really is that good. Fantastic ambiance with a good jukebox. Best place for brunch on Sat and Sun. Try the manmosa if you have the testicular fortitude.
fish sandwich is phenomenal (bar standards). Good food, great selection of beers, love the decor. Great place to call a neighborhood bar. Wish they had one just like it in downtown la.
First Time Visit - Observations.
Being no stranger to a bar - I try to go to a different one at least twice a month and The York was my destination on May 24 (saw it in Los Angeles Magazine piece on Highland Park).
UPON ARRIVING - York Blvd around The York is a DUMP! The City and the merchants in the area should be ashamed of themselves. Note to Owners - It's OK to clean up at least in front of your establishment (Thought maybe to plant and maintain your own tree(s) in the empty tree wells on the sidwalk in front of your place?)
INSIDE - I'm an old school drinker but appreciate what they done. Open ceiling is cool and layout is very well done (big open space with dining separated). Decor was a little cold for my taste, but like I said - I'm old school. Lighting is good and music was very good.
OPERATIONS - I didn't eat (but a lot of people were), but was impressed with the menu. Food looked good and flow from kitchen was pretty steady. The bartender (a woman) was friendly and helpful. They have a good selection of micro-brews on tap - I told her to pick one - she made a good choice. Price was standard for trendy spots...
OVERALL - Was a good visit and the place works hard. I would guess - seeing the age of the patrons - that it probably picks up later - I was gone by 10....
Could be a real great place....
I've lived in Highland Park for a long time and have been dying for a good neighborhood bar that I could go to with my friends or family. The York almost lives up to my expectations. I've been there at least 10 times (it's 4 blocks from where I live) and I've had the same experience ever time.
First the good: Like others have said, the decor and design of The York is excellent. Floor to ceiling windows facing the street, a beautiful, well crafted, bar, and perfect lighting really make the place feel inviting and hip.
Now the bad. The service is horrible. Just horrible. The bartenders didn't know what a lager beer was when I asked and one time I had to wait 10 minutes to get their attention and there was only 7 people sitting at the bar and two bar tenders. Also... the food is way overpriced and the portions are tiny. $9.00 for a grilled cheese? Really?
Don't go until they improve the service and bring down the prices to a Highland Park level, which I hope is soon because we really need this place to work.
I feel like putting a bad review so people will stop going there. The York is the best thing to happen to the neighborhood. The food is good and a bit overpriced, I would get rid of the chicken wings and some other items since it's a bit lame. Good beer selection, diverse crowd. Owner is nice if you catch him in a good mood. The bartenders are fine and a bit rude because you can't blame them. The times that I've been there the people calling their drinks out are either lame or absolutely hammered. This one girl got the attention of the bartender and said "can i get a drink" and he snapped at her saying something like , well I am a bartender- Everyone started laughing. It's also funny when people come in here looking for a scene. It's not like that. Come on people get with the program we're in highland park. Hooray for the York and keep up the good work.
