If I'm in Santa Monica, I stop here to buy a cupcake. They are so moist, delicious flavors. Puts a smile on your face.
All I have to say is YUM!!! – This place is so darling I don't know what to do. The atmosphere is chic yet unpretentious. My favorite! It looks like the Viceroy of cupcakes. And the cupcakes..... deeeeeelicious!!!!!!!
Not only are they beautiful little gems of prettiness but they taste amazingly yummy too. Death by frosting! My favorites are the key lime minis and the banana creme pie shots (they come in tiny little cups with tiny little spoons). I cannot wait to have an event to order a cake from this place. Whoever owns this (I hear it's a cute young couple), you are geniuses!
Beautiful and delicious baby cupcakes!! – So i picked up 4 dozen VDAY special baby cupcakes from here for a potluck at my office. They were a smashing success. They were beautifully decorated and absolutely delicious! The only downside is the office in on a sugar high and bouncing off the walls =) I've tried the cupcakes at larkcakeshop, sprinkles, but i think Vanilla Bakeshop is officially my favorite!
simply delicious! – I have a whole mouth full of sweet teeth and Vanilla Bake Shop satisfies every one of them! With classic and unique flavors, some of which are daily specials, in addition to cookies and tasty drinks, I can always count on a sweet bite from Vanilla. I just came back from New York, where I just had to visit the famous Magnolia Bakery...their cupcakes paled in comparison! They were small and dry and looked homemade, which is cute I guess, but Vanilla's cupcakes are delicious little pieces of art!!
Cute shop but OK cupcakes – In regards to the decor, Vanilla Bake Shop is one of the prettiest cupcake shops in LA, with cotton candy pink walls, damask wallpaper, white chandeliers, and dark wood floors. I especially liked that they had shelves of old fashioned clear jars filled with fine baby blue, green and yellow sprinkles.
They sell baby cupcakes 3 for $5 are uber-cute and just the right size to allow you to try some of their many flavors. Using Belgian chocolates and farmers market ingredients; they make cupcakes like Meyer lemon raspberry and banana chocolate chip in regular and baby sizes (some even come stuffed with filling!). The Old Fashioned, Red Velvet and Mocha are the best here, but I was still dissapointed with the lack of flavor and I wanted a bigger cupcake to fill me up.
Losing hope for this bakery – A few months ago, a coworker brought in a box of Vanilla's cupcakes to sample. After first being impressed by their visual beauty, we mostly agreed that each had a bizarre, off-putting flavor and were extremely dry. However, as a professional baker, I can appreciate that people have different tastes. I am also reluctant to speak ill of other people's food, knowing how difficult it is to start a restaurant, and that there are always kinks to be worked out in the beginning. This week, I gave Vanilla a second try. I tasted the chocolate chip cookies. They were inedible. If I had bought them at Ralph's, I would have been disappointed. My roommate was going to give jars of the cookies to clients, but after she tasted them, she was compelled to throw them out. We (myself and my two roommates, who are not bakers) also tried the shot glass versions of the tiramisu and key lime pie. In the former, the flavor was terrible and the mascarpone was hard. I couldn't even finish it. In the latter, the cream was ruined and the filling was mediocre. I'm sure that the owners are very talented, and that these problems may just be a matter of quality control. Everything looks exceptionally BEAUTIFUL, and the store is ADORABLE. But if they don't address these problems, they are going to start losing customers, fast.
So So – I've been hearing about Vanilla for quite some time and I finally decided to feed into the cupcake craze. What I liked about Vanilla was that you had the option of getting 3 mini cupcakes for $5 (I always want to try everything so this was a great solution!) I found that $3.25 for one cupcake was pricey, but they were big. The red velvet was good, but I also tried the Vanilla Bean and hated the frosting. The coconut chocolate was okay, but I didn't find anything memorable or making me want more. A lot of people love this place, but it was just OKAY for me. I would choose it over Sprinkles, but I would rather go to SusieCakes over any of these cupcake places any day!
Better than Sprinkles – I can honestly tell you that this store is so much better than Sprinkles. The service is friendly, there aren't as many in the crowds and parking is easier and better yet, the cupcakes are more heavenly. You can have regular sized cupcakes or mini ones and they are devine. The mini cupcakes can be eaten in either one bite or two and you don't have to feel too guilty. The Moms Birthday Cake is by far the best and their Red Velvet is a close second. I have a big sweet tooth and Vanilla fixed it right up. I highly recommend this store and it is truly the best cupcake shop I've ever been to. The only slight qualm I have with them is that if you do buy the mini's, you must get them in 3's. Don't know why but ...
This "bake shop" rocks! – I am addicted to the desserts they have here. One taste and I'm sold, especially the Icebox Dessert Shots. My favorites are the Southern Banana Pudding and Triple Berry Shortcake. Their Cupcake Babies are adorable (and affordable), and the perfect size for a tasty buffet of dessert indulgence. It makes me think that I may one day have to order my wedding cake from the Vanilla Bake Shop (if I ever get married). Mmmmm...So good.
Upscale Santa Monica bakery offers gourmet cupcakes, stunning confections and couture cakes fresh-baked daily. – The tiny shop itself is like a dreamily frosted little cake--pale pink buttercream walls, white icing trim, chandeliers and sparkling glass pastry cases. Leisurely Santa Monica locals sip espresso and nibble baby cupcakes while others bustle out with gorgeously boxed treats. The most popular daily cupcake flavor is red velvet, though 20 rotating daily specials feature key lime and mint chocolate. Icebox desserts like tiramisu and Southern banana pudding come in charming "shots." Elegant cakes include spicy carrot, espresso milk and passion fruit.
Upscale cupcake place/ good for parties – As someone who scours the cupcake scene in LA, I was thrilled to try this next addition to the craze. I like the ambiance in here, and their presentation for carry-out is fabulous! I have been bringing these cupcakes to every lunch and party I've attended since they opened this summer. People are always impressed with how "cute" and neat their cupcakes and packaging are--- great shopping bag. Since their large cupcakes are kind of pricey, I always opt for the minis, which are quite enough to satisfy one's sweet tooth since they are so rich. I hope this place does well- it's adorable (and they have free samples!).
