What Our Expert Scouts Say

Hotcakes Bakes
May 06, 2013

They had an amazing selection of the most puffy, deliciously soft, gently coloured macarons ever. The cupcake come in large and mini sizes, and the frosting is not too heavy, buttery or overbearing in ratio like other famous cupcake bakeries in LA.

hot cakes = not the cake you ordered!! Poor customer service. Im so sad to say that they have screwed up twice now on custom orders. Once on my Wedding day when the custom drum Grooms cake never arrived (they remembered the wedding cake thank goodness), however the grooms cake, we were told "was left in the fridge" and had to wait till our return from the honeymoon to get it, then last night for my Fathers 60th birthday cake. I ordered a Lemon cake with pineapple chinks for filling and got a plain white cake with pineapple. The decoration was correct, however, the actual cake I ordered I did not receive, seeing that lemon cake is his favorite. Its a shame, I like their flavors, but I wont let them screw up another important event for me. I guess spending $100+ each on custom cakes wont change the ability to actually have it.. :-/ In an attempt to rectify the cake debacle, I called the bakery sunday, tuesday and wednseday. Finally on wednesday had Jen (a manager) tell me to bring a piece of the cake in to verify the flavors. Drove out to San Bernadino that night just to pick up a piece of the cake to bring back. Brough it in, and wouldnt ya know it, they claim that it was lemon flavored and refuse to do anything!!! They do not value their customers and stand behind a bland tasteless cake, claiming that it was indeed lemon. Well for the 8 of us that had the cake on Saturday night, they lose us as customers. You should never have to spend $100 on a cake that tastes like its from Albertsons, let alone on one that's not lemon!!! Their customer service is disgraceful and they do not deserve another cent of my hard earned money. You have been warned!

Caution! Avoid fo uyour events. Caution!!! Do not use for your special events. The online and in-store picture gallery convinced me to use them over a more tasty bakery, which is not hard to find. Only they could not have made to many more mistakes with my party tray order. This was for my wedding I ordered a cake, which was correct but that was it. They party tray of minis had was a mismatch of full size and minis- not one of the four mini cupcake flavors I ordered was included and they gave me Burnt Caneles! The worst part was their response. I had to make several contacts to get a partial credit, on the tray only of course and then I received a nasty letter.

I order from Hotcakes regularly and they are fabulous! the bake goods are fresh and great, the girls are hot and the owner very French! this place is happening, they deliver and that is priceless in LA. Don't waste your time writing a review if you have nothing nice to say you obviously have way too much time on your hands lady. Hotcakes makes the best CAKES IN TOWN!

Great cake and customer service. My husband got my birthday cake from here and I liked it so much I ordered my 3 year old's cake here, too. The woman who took my order was very accomodating to my special requests and the cake turned out beautifully. It's nice to have a good bakery in the neighborhood.

Horrible, rude, unreliable service and mediocre bakes. Horrible service! I called to order a light catering for a 10 person meeting the following day. I was assured that a box of assorted muffins, cookies, etc. would be delivered to my meeting area by 10 a.m with service materials - at least napkins included. Instead, a woman showed up half an hour late, on her cell phone and just handed over a box. When I called the store to complain, I asked for the manager and a woman who identified herself as the owner told me she had been the one who made the late delivery. She did not apologize but instead gave me excuses about why she couldn't fulfill this simple request. I asked for a refund and she screamed she would give me one and then hung up on me. Of the $65 bill, only $20 of it was refunded. And to top it off, the baked items were only so-so. I promise to never waste my time with this place again and I urge you to avoid it as well.

Coconut Raspberry Butter Cream Cake Rocks. Ordered the cake for a birthday and it was amazing. I'm not even a big sweet tooth and I can't get enough of that cake. Very light and moist even though it sounds really rich. I ordered the day before for a morning pick up and it was ready when I got there which was important since I was on a time deadline. Staff was very friendly and I had no problem parking right in front of the front door.

I will go back over and over.

This unassuming Culver City dessert shop lures in locals with its three-tiered designer cakes and rows of red velvet cupcakes.. In Short
From strawberry to German chocolate, English toffee to cookies and cream, this Culver City bake shop has cakes and cupcakes covered. Like another well-known sweet shop (rhymes with "tinkles") the storefront is marked by a signature hot pink sign, beckoning those with a sweet tooth to step inside. Although designed for grab-and-go grub, scruffily-clad locals can usually be found sitting on wooden bar stools at a makeshift counter, scarfing down freshly-made French pastries. Desserts of the day are written on a black chalkboard menu along with the cupcake and cake flavors du jour. While this cozy bakery might skimp on frills, the focus is squarely where it counts--the batter.

Good, hard to get to. The cupcakes were good, but the people working there weren't overly friendly. It was a bit annoying to park and the location isn't the best.

No frills great bakery. We have been getting birthday cakes for the last year or so. Although I try to stay away from past or present "trendy" desserts (honestly, did you ever have a tiramisu that beat out a good brownie?). I have to admit that their Red Velvet cake is really good (albeit rarely even -- it has more than a little bit of the "homey" lopsidedness to it). The cupcakes are to my mind as good as Sprinkles, although I am not a huge fan (I miss the Van de Kamp devil's food cupcake of my 60s childhood). The baker (owner?) seems to be pretty no-nonsense, but the people interfacing with the public (usually young women) have been uniformly pleasant.

I would say that this is my new favorite birthday cake place.
