Editorial Review for Popkiller Second – by Cadien Clark

In Short
Never mind the Mountain Dew can that doubles as a bong, there is some serious fashion to be found at Second Street's buzzing mainstay. In addition to the line of namesake Popkiller T-shirts, overly dyed-to-very-cool-effect military jackets, vintage flannel, Lucha Va Voom Mexican wrestling masks, Asian-inspired Rolling Stones concert tees and esoteric shirts referencing Philip Glass, moccasins, rain boots and 80/20 sneakers, there are gag gifts galore. Still, alongside the message lighters and "Blythe" dolls are stellar vintage and contemporary frocks, like a Rojas silver metallic dress and endless selections from local and Japanese designers. Vibrant sunglasses overflow on tabletops and there is a special glass case for pretty paraphernalia in the form of, uh, specialty pipes and incense.

Hits: Staff is mellow and surprisingly friendly for stores of this cool kid/streetwear stature. The offerings marry humor and edge effectively.

Misses: Novelty items like "fanny floss" are a little off-the-grid for a shop with so many truly fashionable things to absorb.

Insider Tips

Parking

Little Tokyo can get crowded on weekends, but there are plenty of pay lots, including one across from the worth-a-visit Japanese-American museum.

The Extras

Word is there's a "secret" room in the back of the store. You didn't hear it here.
