What People Are Saying About Bistro KA

Featured Review

At this hip little Japanese bistro tucked next to Target, sultry mood lighting makes you forget you're actually in a mall. Sleek dinnerware, black cloth napkins and elegantly presented sushi only add to the stylish experience. Shoppers from Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom join sushi-savvy Valley locals drawn in by sophisticated cocktails and an expansive Japanese menu--definitely eschewing a run of the mill vibe. Starters like albacore tataki, rainbow carpaccio with yuzu and lobster miso soup complement traditonal classics like agedashi tofu and scallop dynamite; creative rolls include the popcorn…

Editor's Tips

What to Drink:
Handmade specialty cocktails with fresh juices include the Mandarin on Fire made with Absolut, fresh orange, lime and serrano chiles; and the Basil Sling with junipero, basil honey syrup and soda water. Echigo, Asahi and Sapporo beers are offered, along with Veuve Cliquot.
When to Go:
Happy hour runs weekdays from 4-7pm and all day Sunday at the bar and lounge. Well drinks are half off, while specialty drinks and sake are $2 off. There's also discounted appetizers.
The Extras:
Vegetarians will find many dishes to choose from, including agedashi tofu, green tea noodles, vegetable tempura, clear mushroom soup, and baby spinach salad; five special vegetarian rolls include the Futo Veggie Maki with asparagus, kaiware, gobo, cucumber and avocado.

  2. Don't be scared by the elegant decor of this restaurant.
  3. If you don't care about service, this is an excellent place to dine (it's comfortable and visually pleasing).

  5. It's true the restaurant has beautiful modern decor and a seemingly well designed space.
dessert

  1. We tried the crab cakes which were only $5 bucks for happy hour along with a snowcrab special soy paper roll thing that Johnny recommended.
  2. The happy hour selection is awesome (love the crab cakes and beef yakitori).
drinks
100.0% positive
  1. They need to realize that they would do better by treating their non-chef staff better and keeping one or two bartenders for a long time as folks who chill out at the bar and come for happy hour like to have the same bartender.
  2. Don't get it twisted, they have a full sushi bar, but its their fresh take on Japanese and Western fusion that got me hooked.
  3. Maybe Bistro Ka would be a great place to stop by for a drink on some festive weekend, but that's only if you can get a drink at all.

  5. Don't get it twisted, they have a full sushi bar, but its their fresh take on Japanese and Western fusion that got me hooked.
  6. Parking is great (odd for a sushi place), because its located at the Westfield Topanga Mall.
  7. Our food was amazing.
  8. Their half roasted chicken is delicious.
  9. The food was good and the prices were great!
  10. This, however, does not make up for the mediocre food and complete breakdown of their service routines.
  11. At least our baked lobster sushi roll was decent, but i did notice the imitation crab filling was strangley reminiscent of the bulk sushi you get at Costco.
  12. However, we love their happy hour M-F 4-7pm (see you then and there) and love their sushi.

Pretty Good

by liljedi at Citysearch

I have had sushi in many different restaurants. But I thought that this place deserves special notice.

The nice thing about their menu is that they have a wide variety of items, even for people who don't particularly like raw fish.

Their spider roll is incredible. I get it every time I go there. I even took my mom here. She's never had sushi before, and she liked the place. I took both my bridesmaids here for lunch, both of which love sushi. And they both said that the fish quality excellent and that the portions are nice for the price.

  • Pros: Fresh Fish, Something for everyone
  • Cons: They don't serve coke, only Pepsi

Unfresh Fish

by Ry G at Citysearch

I should have read the Yelp reviews before going here because somebody said they found a worm in their edamame. I believe it because I had a really bad case of food poysoning within hours after the restaurant. I hope I can save somebody else from getting sick also. Thanks.

  • Pros: Recommend to people you don't like
  • Cons: Food poysoning

Good food. Great happy hour. So-so service.

by kashomon at Citysearch

They need to realize that they would do better by treating their non-chef staff better and keeping one or two bartenders for a long time as folks who chill out at the bar and come for happy hour like to have the same bartender. Lately changing staff too frequently. However, we love their happy hour M-F 4-7pm (see you then and there) and love their sushi. Have not tried entrees yet. Decent cocktails. Lots of variety of sake. Try the specialty sushi rolls (not discounted during happy hour). Love their Spicy Tuna rolls and Seared Tuna Sashimi and Baked Lobster & Maki Rolls. Enjoy!!! :)

  • Pros: Great Sushi. Awesome Happy Hour M-F 4-7.
  • Cons: So-so service (high turnover of staff, bartender).

HORRIBLE!~

by diorgirl13 at Citysearch

have gone to this place for a year and in the beginning it was great. The sushi IS BAD! REALLY LOW QUALITY FISH! The staff is rude and they don't seem to care. It was a special night tonight for my husband and I so we thought we would try this place one more time. We get there and they gave away our reservation, the girl was snotty and thinking she was so funny made her snide comments and either the manager or the owner just kept saying sorry and did nothing to correct the service. We ended up going to BANZAI in CALABASAS, they had a nice table waiting for us and the sushi is 10 times better and in a nicer location. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME AT BISTRO KA THEY SERVE BAD SUSHI!
