love marty, nice place, great service, attentive staff, ridiculous very notion, likes little bartendar, cold stellas
Nice Try. Ambiance wrong for the the neighborhood, valet parking is silly, but with friendly bartenters who make tastey drinks with high quality ingrediants. On a personal note, I'm sick of seeing things like "Kobe Beef" burgers and hotdogs. First off Kobe beef is not available in the US. Second the high fat content and exellent marbling of the meat can only be appreciated in steak form, otherwise it is ground up and is the same thing as buying 30% fat ground beef for 80 cents a pound. The very notion of a Kobe beef hot dog is ridiculous. What is it, the lips and butt of the Kobe cow? Come on.
A place to get away.... I have been to many bar and lounges, but Marty's is by far the best. The great menu compliments the deco of an asian theme. Everyday is a new day, but thursdays is always flashback 80s. The staff is on thier game, es[eacially the cocktail girl (wow). I have to say the first thing you see is a gentle monster who works the front door. He always greets you with a warm welcome and he makes you feel safe when you are there (but I wouldn't want to get him mad). The only down fall is the music the little bartendar likes to play. Even though the place is in Highland park, please play songs in english. It's always the same old spanish songs (bar music for a bar)... duh.. Other than that ,it's the new hot spot in LA... The downtown/hollywood vibe without the price or snobbs...
Great Food, Service, & Vibe.. Wow! The streets spoke and I listened! I got word from some friends that the Kobe Beef Burger was to die for. Boy, was it! The juiciest & most delicious burger I have had in a long time. It paired really well, of course, with a couple of cold Stellas. My buddies shared a pizza & calamari. I had a nibble of both and must say pretty darn good too. We went there around 7ish. We saved money with the happy hour prices. Their staff was attentive and friendly. We were served immediately. The music was cool - a mix of lounge music and rare grooves. We will definitely go back. The bartendar mentioned that they will soon have a live band on Tuesdays that plays Journey to Rage Against the Machine to James Brown. Cool!
Great Local Option. My boyfriend and I love Marty's. We're usually there around Happy Hour - it's never too packed, the service is friendly, the vibe is mellow, the kobe burger and mac and cheese are fantatsic, and the space is attractive and comfortable (though the a/c is usually cranked a little high for our tastes, so bring a jacket.) I've heard the crowd can vary by night, but we've always been happy when we've been there.
Lame. Really, really, really, really, really bad. This is definitely the worst of the new bars in Highland Park. Avoid.
Nice try, but....
First off, why on earth is there valet parking? There is ample parking everywhere, including large public lots across the street.
The space is small, uncomfortable and poorly put together. Despite seats most people would rather stand. The lighting, while still dim, is awkwardly bright. But worst of all it is WAY too loud. The place does not have a dance club vibe, but the music is too loud to talk to other people.
We got one drink and left. There is The York and Johnny's a block down, both of which are FAR FAR better spots to get a drink.
So far ,.....best place in Highland Park. I've been to Marty's 3 different times ,....and let me tell you, that everytime I've gone the service has been great and the food has been tastey! You have to try the Kobe Burger w/ the sweet potato fries and the Mac n Cheese! People have just been friendly and I feel comfortable when I'm there.....I like it better than any other place in Highland Park right now ,.....I've told all my friends about the place. Oh and you should also try Sabrina's Surprise martini,....yummie!
ear PLUGS. Wow, what a nice place to meet up with old friends and meet new ones. We have told many a people about this great place BUT the last few times we could not hear each other talk over the very LOUD music pumping in the back ground. We don't mind music but would like not to talk very loudly or read lips. Maybe the tunes could be cranked down just a bit.
Highland Park's newest lounge adds a chic vibe to hipster York Avenue..
In Short
This Thai-inspired lounge puts a new spin on the standard Highland Park bar. Its pairing of seductive, diffused lighting with chocolate-and-gold walls, gives it a tribal, yet modern vibe. Small gold statues top its brown leather couches, and a small pool of light seeps in from a large bronze circular light. Customers, both leftover locals and emerging area hipsters, dine on the kitchen's signature dish, Kobe-style burgers with garlic aioli. Patrons with lighter appetites feast on sweet potato fries and crispy calamari.
