In Short
The look is minimalist--soft gray walls and natural wood--but the vibe is fast and smoove, much like the electronica wafting from the owner's iPod. The bar itself is an off-center triangular shape, with hundreds of top-shelf vodka bottles lingering above. A cozy fireplace spawns more intimate conversations among the 20- to 40-somethings disproportionately dressed in black--much like the striking servers who tend the bar. A small menu features staples like sandwiches, burgers and fries to soak up the booze.

I've been here a few times to eat the Kogi Tapas. A friend of mine and I agree that the quality of the food can be inconsistent. Some nights, it may be great, and on other nights not so great. Otherwise, the food is great, the staff maintain their composure even when it gets really crazy. Overall, it's a great place only to get the Kogi Tapas without having to hunt for the truck.

With all the Kogi hype I was very excited to check it out. And what a disappointment it turned out to be. They are ill equipped to make it a good experience with their staff. The two bartenders really need to kick it up a notch and light a fire under it. They have the attitude that they couldn't possibly care less if the patrons are having a good time and being properly tended to. The dishwasher behind the bar has more interest in standing around keeping himself hydrated that helping out his coworkers and the poor waitress was trying her hardest to keep everything organized and maintain a sweet demeanor. She was the best thing about the whole night. The place was packed, but very poorly run to say the least. We didn't get several things we ordered, mainly because it was so chaotic. The food was fair, not great, but good enough to find the truck somewhere around town. There's no way I would go back to give it another shot.

I used to frequent this place before the renovation when it was a dive bar. I noticed it was open again when passing by so I stopped in for a drink with a friend. The service was slow to say the least. It was on a saturday early evening. There were maybe 10 patrons in the place. We sat down at the bar and probably waited 10 minutes before we were noticed by the bartender. I ordered a glass of wine and got a glass with the previous patrons lipstick all over it. After waiting another 10 minutes to get the bartenders attention I gave it back, even though I did not drink any of it I still paid almost $10 for the glass. I'm not stepping foot in there ever again.

Where to Sit:
Grab one of the briskly modern gray velvet chairs and cozy up to the fireplace--it's a little removed from the fray and more intimate. There's a patio for smokers.
On the Menu:
You have the choice of East Coast- or West Coast-style when if you order a Philly cheese steak. East means you get authentic Cheez Whiz; go west and it's white cheddar.
Fun Fact:
The lounge offers Czechwar beer on tap, and is one of the only bars in California to serve the Czech favorite.
