In Short – Formerly home to the Mediterranean mainstay, Doug Arango's, the new, earth-toned space is decidedly more casual. A bounty of booths and wooden banquettes surround an open kitchen and a flat screen TV, where a thirsty after-work following clamors for affordable food and drink. The new menu has preserved the Arango fave, the duck burger with gouda cheese and cherry ketchup. Also offered are an array of chalkboard specials, raw seafood appetizers, cheese plates and inventive--but still accessible--options for lunch, afternoon snacks and dinner.

solid food, warm hearthy ambiance

by kara nortman at Citysearch

I had a nice solid meal at Melrose bar and grill. I had the chicken parm special, which was great, with a side of sweet potatoe fries (hard to go wrong). My dinner date went with the veggie burger, which was doused in a beautiful array of wild mushrooms. She raved about it. The place has a nice feel, a warm, shades of brown, just finished the harvest feel inside, complemented by outside tables when the weather is nice (which is pretty much always given this is LA).

We did not have room for dessert, though I saw a couple brownie sundaes go by, which looked delicious.

My only negative- I could see the flat screen over the bar from my seat. Call me scarred, but TVs in restaurants remind me of boston, which is a great city full of people who apparently like to watch TV while they dine. TVs should be reserved for sports bars and bars that are removed from the main dining room.

Valet parking outside costs $6, also parking on the street.

  • Pros: good comfort food with healthy options
  • Cons: TV over the bar

Terrible Management

by socalfood at Citysearch

i used to go to melrose bar and grill all the time but we had two terrible experiences back to back. first of all, my husband ordered a chicken dish and the bartender told him it was organic chicken. my husband later got sick (we haven't eaten unorganic meat in years) and called the manager. he said the chicken was never organic and when we told him what happened he said "oh well, he was a new bartender". we decided to give them one more try and came in to the bar again. the manager opened the window while we were having drinks and a patron outside was smoking and the smoke was filling the bar. we asked him to please close it and other patrons were unhappy too. his exact words were "i can't". we left immediately. i rather pay $20 a drink then ever go back again.

  • Cons: rude, unaccomodating
