Downtown's neighborhood bookseller provides a pleasant place to browse among a collection of interesting, genre-hopping titles.. Long a commercial wasteland, the Old Bank District around Fourth and Main has come a long way since the Skid Row rummies toddled east and the loft dwellers arrived. This bright-lit independent bookshop caters to the interests of the neighborhood, with a big section dedicated to historic Los Angeles lore, exhibits of local photographers and regular in-store readings and signings. Other strong collections include classic fiction (adult and juvenile), mysteries, contemporary literary fiction (including new hardcovers), African-American literature, travel, cooking, pets, graphic novels, reference books and a small, well chosen used paperback section. Comfy chairs with their own reading lights welcome the long term browser, and owner Julie Swayze is always quick to recommend her latest favorites.
