Editorial Review for Thomas Chase Hairdressing – by Mar Yvette

In Short
A cross between a rock club and a hair salon, this haute shop is where coiff-conscious dudes and the rock-and-stroll set go for the latest cuts and color. Named after co-owning creative directors Eli Thomas and Chase Kusero, the space may look like a serene cottage with its Zen-like fountain and foliage out front, but just a few steps beyond the entryway and the experience is decidedly amped up ... way up. Blaring '80s hits bounce off black walls with large white mirrors, while stylists--a diverse bunch led by Kusero, a dead ringer for Dave Navarro (tattoos, guyliner and painted nails included) and Thomas, the tall and lean, more clean cut of the two--trim, lather, style and blowdry to their clients' content. As the night progresses, the champagne and wine flow more freely, the energy loosens up and the rear patio bar takes on a loungey vibe, where clients can mingle, read or just hang out before, in between or after treatments.

Hits: Finally, a salon that's open after the office is closed. Bonus: You won't find any snobby stylists here--this place is attitude-free.

Misses: Those on a budget might be hard-pressed to afford services; also, finding a metered parking spot on this stretch is often a challenge.

I live in the Bay Area, but I fly to Los Angeles to get my hair cut at Thomas Chase. It seems totally eccentric and perhaps it would be ridiculous if I wasn't already in town for other business. That being said, I'd fly in anyway, because Thomas Chase is that good and Eli, my amazingly talented stylist, is worth it. I have never left this salon feeling less than incredible. I could go on and on about Eli, but go see for yourself, you wont regret it. I actually get excited about going to get a haircut now. They took extra care to put in especially comfortable furniture. My living room furniture at home isn't this comfortable. If I lived closer I'd book a conditioning treatment when the budget allowed - their chairs are insanely comfy, and it feels like more of a spa treatment. No more neck wrenching washes, and my hair is so unbelievably soft and happy after they get done with it (thanks Bo!). I'm gushing, but deservedly so. It's not the cheapest cut on the block, but it's not unreasonable, and they are a bargain for what you get. They actually care about you and your hair. Beautiful hair inspires them; they like working with it, they like creating it, and they do a fabulous job. Go in, have champagne, water, or whatever you want. They'll order you some food from one of the Montana restaurants, and then you'll get a stellar wash and head massage, and the best cut or style you've ever had. ps. that insider tip about the cost is high. I've never paid close to that, and Eli has always cut my hair. Of course, services can reach that price, but not without reason.

Pros: perfect hair every time, comfortable furniture, fun people, open late

Cons: its on Montana. Park in the back or bring your quarters.

I've been in the beauty industry for just over 20 years and you can imagine how many hairstylists I've worked with. I've had the privilege of working with some of the most talented in the business, and also had the honor of them cutting and coloring my hair. Larry is the best haircut and color I've had in years. He's professional, laid-back, extremely well dressed (I always look to people's personal appearance as a direct reflection of how they care for themselves and ultimately their clients), and most of all, talented. I also wanted to go a bit more blonde, and he made my hair appear to be a truly "just off the beach" sunkissed blonde and not at ALL brassy or artificial (which can look SO bad on a man!). He also did one of my best girl friend's hair and did a most luxurious, bombshell blowdry (and perfect color!) on her. We walked out feeling like and LOOKING like superstars! The salon itself is quaint, chic, intimate, and discreet (did I mention my girl friend is an actress?) with the most amiable, cool, friendly staff. When I was offered champagne I knew I was somewhere unique! I will be going back to Larry....forever!

Pros: The staff, their knowledge, the service, the AMAZING shampoo chairs, the atmosphere!

Cons: NONE!
