Editorial Review for Citrus at Social Hollywood – by Martha Burr

In Short
Jeffrey Chodorow's relaunching of Social Hollywood's restaurant enlists celeb chef Michel Richard (Citronelle, Washington, D.C.) to rustle up deluxe grub for the clubby star crowd. The revamping of this historic 1920s movie star haunt creates a surprisingly sexy lime-green background for A-list Hollywood babes in their Jimmy Choo stilettos, Beverly Hills socialites, jaded young actors and rich club kids. Richard's Cal-French comfort food menu features onion tarts, 72-hour slow-cooked short ribs, and a lobster burger. While regular foodies may find all the celeb chitter-chatter below their tastes, the French fries cooked in clarified butter may be the flavor of the month that has the most staying power.

Hits: This place is super sceney, so it's fun to bring out-of-town friends for a night of Hollywood glamour and celeb-spotting, not to mention dynamic star-chef chow.

Misses: Weekend reservations are tough to score, and prices are high.

Insider Tips

Know Before You Go

Reservations are essential for Friday and Saturday nights--dining at the restaurant doesn't assure patrons admittance to the club nights at Social.

What to Drink

The high-end wine list offers select California and European bottles, with about two dozen available by the glass. Specialty cocktails ($13) with fresh juices include the Cucu Cocktail and Citrus Cosmo.

The Extras

The adjacent Bar at Social extends the party into the night; the Barrymore Ballroom hosts larger events, while the second level offers three private VIP rooms for events and private dining.

This club is a great venue with a upscale crowd. I enjoy Friday nights the most because of the crowd that this venue has and the amazing girl to guy ratio. I promote Friday nights at Social as well as many other Hollywood clubs, email me for guest list with "Guest List" in the subject line and your phone number for contact in the body. My email is M_Zdar@hotmail com

Pros: Mansion syle venue, good D.J.'s. Great Decor, Hot Girls, Fair line

Cons: Packed Dance Floor.

I just do NOT understand chefs who put their name on a million restaurants all over the country and cook in NONE of them. I would rather enjoy cuisine from a Real Chef who owns and operates One kitchen.... Needless to say, Citrus is yet another restaurant that uses the name of an absent chef. Yes, Micheal Richard designed ther menu, but he is in D.C. He stayed to train this staff to prepare his food, and then skipped town (just like Wolfgang Puck, Mario Battali, Kerry Simon, etc.). I digress. To Citrus: the space and the staff are lovely. We were seated immediately at a comfortable and large table (for a party of 2). We had some great cocktails (I had the Blueberry lemonade, my date had a martini), and then started with the Onion tart. It came without share plates and was a little droopy in the middle (not great for ladies wearing expensive dresses?), but was otherwise palatable. The Shortribs were good, the Lobster Burger was TOTALLY overpowered by the bread, but once I removed it, the lobster and accompanying garnishes were tasty. Dessert was the highlight of the whole experience; the kitkat chocolate dessert is whimsical and tasty, and the creme brulee was a good execution of a classic. all in all, though, the food was like a higher-end version of Chili's. Every "trendy" LA spot has shortribs, some kind of burger, french fries, etc. They are not reinventing the wheel here at Citrus. All in all, it was just unmemorable and overpriced. I will never go back, unless someone else is footing the bill. the food is good, but unimaginative and OVERpriced.

Pros: staff & decor

Cons: overpriced and unimaginative menu
