In Short – On a strip of Santa Monica known more for its cheap eats and drunken thrills, this new breed of coffeehouse has emerged offering premium roast blends in a modern and luxurious setting. Open until 2am on weekends, the well-designed space features clean modern stylings like something out of the West Elm catalogue. The drinks are strong, made by a professionally trained staff who knows more than your average barista. During the day, WeHo suits and local gays enjoy their brew while utilizing the complimentary WiFi. By night, the party crowd invades the tranquil space…

Java Detour is awsome!

Whatever with the idiot who wrote the review, "cheap thrills, but at a price." When is it ever acceptable to physically touch someone in a provacative manner that you don't know and who has not indicated that it is okay for you touch them!?! Is it supposed to be okay because you are in West Hollywood and the person works in bar (err, coffee house)?! Whoever wrote that review is exactly the kind of gay person we need less of. Why not ask your friend to apologize to the guy? That is just for starters. And what kind of an idiot goes out in West Hollywood and complains that the drinks are too strong - and drinks for $3, no less!! Oh, maybe the guy thought that because he was paying a whole $3 dollars for his drink he could cop a feel from the promoter. I am gay, but some gay people irritate the hell out of me.
I have only recently discovered Java Detour, though I have seen it while driving by a number of times. Went there once for good, cheap drinks served by genuinely friendly bar tenders (err, baristas) and have been going ever since (when I go out that is) My friend had a coffe once and I had a sip and it was really good (10X better than that starbucks burnt rubber stuff). Since then, I have been using the space to study in the mornings - really enjoy my time there. Nice, clean atmosphere with good music playing and lots to look at. Love their white mochas, though they are a tad on the sweet side.
- Pros: good coffee, friendly baristas/bar tenders, cheap bar drinks at night
- Cons: music sometimes a lilttle loud at night
Cheap thrills, but at a price!

My friends and I were approached on the corner by a very good-looking promoter who said that the first round would be $3 a drink inside so we decided to check it out. We got in, the long islands were ridiculously strong, we had to buy a coke to mix it with! When we got up for our second drink, the promoter guy comes up and tells the bartender not to serve us... I am confused why but he says that my friend "inappropriately touched him." and threatened to call the cops! I did not understand WHAT was going on, I thought they were kidding so I said, "Go ahead!" and the guy gets on his old Razor and actually calls the cops. Needless to say, what's the point in the $3 drink if you're going to be heckled and thrown out?
- Pros: $3 drinks, location
- Cons: service, the promoter guy outside
