Editorial Review for Tranquility Base – by Lilian Lee
In Short
Every thirty minutes, the main dining room, side room, and patio of this quirky space changes its lighting scheme. And with 16 million different color options in its LED lighting system, it's not likely that you'll find yourself in a particular hue of blue or green more than once--although someone should have considered that nobody looks good in a sickly glow. You see, this is a place that tries to blindly manage every single patron's expectations. The menu, for example, runs the gamut from charcuterie and sliders to spicy tuna rolls and quesadillas--and the staff have all drunk from the "everything is great" Kool-Aid. Sports fans are treated to huge flat screen TVs, which seems odd in a space looking to lure sexy singles, with its billowing design and tasteful patio (where, curiously, smoking is not allowed). The message here is that mostly everyone is welcome, but no one really feels at home, except maybe the corporate crowd at lunch or the nightcap-seeking loft dwellers from upstairs.
Hits: The bartenders and managers go out of their way to be friendly. Also, this particular area of downtown doesn't have a lot of nightlife options, so it's good to see it developing.
Misses: It would be better if the venue focused on one thing and did it well--it's hard enough to be a trendy sports bar or a good steakhouse-meets-Asian-and-Latin-fusion restaurant, let alone both at once.

Insider Tips
ParkingThere's no valet, but street parking isn't bad in the area, and there's also a lot directly across the street.
What to DrinkOnly beers are printed on the drink menu, but there is a full bar, including potent cocktail infusions that can be served as a martini, on the rocks, or straight up.

I went here with my girlfriend the other night... We kind of just walked by and decided to drop in for a glass of wine and dessert... Although it is slightly hidden in an office building, the decor makes up for it. With modern/chic lighting, cabanas, a fire pit, full bar, and diver scallops (yummy)....it is a definite relaxed place to grab a drink; this could be a great spot to watch a game or perhaps a pre-Laker game warmup as it is within walking distance of the Staples Center. Service was fast and friendly, and the prices seemed fair. Overall I would recommend this to anyone looking for a casual drink. I saw that they were also open for lunch.
Pros: atmosphere, food
Cons: location

One of the worst places I have seen in the new Downtown LA 's resurgence. I agree with the Editor's review, TB does not know what it is trying to be and with so much competition in downtown I think it falls way short. It's still working out it's "new place kinks" but Edison, Takami, Seven Grand, et al. all opened with nice reviews (not sure where the comparison comes from). The last review states that Trifecta re-opened - yes it did and as a simple query of "trifecta" in the citysearch service illustrates, it re-opened in January 2008 and is already closed AGAIN. Or if you prefer read about their Chapter 11 request for protection or drive by Hill and 2nd and see the giant sign that reads "Restaurant Space For Lease." Be well tranquility base and enjoy your slumber.
Pros: Nice folks working there
Cons: Awful office building placement, parking, overall value, awkward & bad signage
