Editorial Review for Tranquility Base – by Lillian Lee
In Short
Every thirty minutes, the main dining room, side room, and patio of this quirky space changes its lighting scheme. And with 16 million different color options in its LED lighting system, it's not likely that you'll find yourself in a particular hue of blue or green more than once--although someone should have considered that nobody looks good in a sickly glow. You see, this is a place that tries to blindly manage every single patron's expectations. The menu, for example, runs the gamut from charcuterie and sliders to spicy tuna rolls and quesadillas--and the staff have all drunk from the "everything is great" Kool-Aid. Sports fans are treated to huge flat screen TVs, which seems odd in a space looking to lure sexy singles, with its billowing design and tasteful patio (where, curiously, smoking is not allowed). The message here is that mostly everyone is welcome, but no one really feels at home, except maybe the corporate crowd at lunch or the nightcap-seeking loft dwellers from upstairs.
Hits: The bartenders and managers go out of their way to be friendly. Also, this particular area of downtown doesn't have a lot of nightlife options, so it's good to see it developing.
Misses: It would be better if the venue focused on one thing and did it well--it's hard enough to be a trendy sports bar or a good steakhouse-meets-Asian-and-Latin-fusion restaurant, let alone both at once.

Insider Tips
ParkingThere's no valet, but street parking isn't bad in the area, and there's also a lot directly across the street.
What to DrinkOnly beers are printed on the drink menu, but there is a full bar, including potent cocktail infusions that can be served as a martini, on the rocks, or straight up.

I've been to Tranquility Base and I love that this bar is in downtown. I'm tired of these bars where management interprets "exclusive" as having rude staff. Everyone at TB is friendly and though they are working out kinks as any new place will, I am a loyal fan. Having it 2 blocks away doesn't hurt either. If you want a romantic night for drinks on a weekday, go to the patio. The lighting and fire pit are great. The chocolate mousse is surprisingly yummy for a bar or any restaurant. FYI: Go to Trifecta if you want a sports bar, they re-opened. Hope you know the world does not revolve around one customer.
Pros: Great staff, dessert, romantic patio and fun for groups
Cons: Nope

THIS PLACE IS NOT GOOD!! I went there yesterday for the Laker game and the rigid owner "Dave" wouldn't turn up the volume despite us being the only party in the entire restaurant! Reasons why it's not good: 1) Owner: Dave 2) No smoking lounge: "Dave got mad that people put their cigs out in the fire pit and ground...dude it's a bar and it's concrete floor outside" 3) Boring - reminds me of an old person's hang out, the place plays jazz music low and has the games on?? I was afraid to talk as people could hear a pin drop 4) Citysearch has it wrong - this is not a sports bar its "sports friendly" which means don't go to watch a game 5) A BlueMoon beer at lunch was $6! A Jack and Coke is $8 dollars during a boring Sunday! Are you kidding? I recommend going to Elevate/Takami, Standard Roof Top Bar, Edision, J Lounge or anything else in the area.......don't waste your time or money with this here today gone tomorrow place. PS: Does anyone remember Trifecta on 2nd? Dave......you won't last more than 6 to 8 months if that!
Pros: None
Cons: Beers are expensive, Boring Vibe, Kind of corny, Owner
