What People Are Saying About BACARO L.A.

Featured Review

In Short – Owned by two USC grads sharing a love of wine, Santos Uy (Silver Lake Wine, A.O.C.) and partner Danny Kronfli have created a stylish haven for university grad students, profs and adventurous Eastsiders. "Bacari" are Venetian wine bars (named after the wine god Bacchus); the ever-changing list culls from varietals around the world, but there's a definite focus on more obscure, small-production Italian wines. A stunning backlit wine bottle ceiling and reclaimed barnwood tables host the crowd talking politics and snacking on "cicheti" (Venetian tapas) like braised beef shanks,…

Editor's Tips

Know Before You Go:
Paired wine flights, usually priced from $8 to $12, change weekly and offer innovative couplings for both neophyte and jaded palates. The 20 or so wines listed on the chalkboard change weekly, so regulars will always find something new.
Parking:
Somewhat obscure parking is available in the back, off of 24th--enter between the red and blue awnings.
Save Money:
Simple lunch specials offer a combo of grilled or cold panini, salad and beer for under $10.

  1. Granted we got two orders of the beautiful roasted garlic bruchetta and carried the faint aroma with us for the next few days -- but so, so worth it!
  2. Wine list is mostly Old World for bottles, with a couple (apparently rotating) glass (CA/ WA/ OR) picks -- and super great deals on half-off Monday nights.

Awesome Food

by stone ted87

Our food came out on time and was prepared just right. I would recommend this place to a hungry person the portions are huge! Service as ok but the food made up for it! I’d go here again for sure.

Wine and Dine Me Here!

by Miss Gaby

You wouldn't think a great find like this would be found in a very busy family community area of Downtown Los Angeles.

I was very lucky to experience some of the delicious items on the menu made by the executive chef Lior Hillel.

This is what I was given:

Pan-Seared Scallops

The Bacaro Burger

Crostini

Roasted Eggplant Pizza

(ref: photos I've uploaded)

Each item on the menu is originally $7 dollars but during happy hour they are $5! Every dish can be paired with a glass of wine to finish your meal off!

Wonderful decorations with penciled art pieces and 100 wine bottles stuck together on the ceiling. There is also a chalkboard wall with the daily specials written on it.

Wooden chairs and tables that are actually very comfortable. It is not a very big location there are about 9 tables total and a little bit a standing area.

It does get very busy but it is worth the wait!

  • Pros: Great evening ambiance, selection of wines and food
  • Cons: in an awkward neighborhood

Fabulous fabulous small plates!

by Meena V

Really good, and shockingly moderately priced! I (unreasonably hungry) met up with two (also ravenous) girlfriends here on a weeknight, and despite eating till we couldn't anymore, the check was less than $60! For some really interesting, off-the-beaten path small plate dining, this is a STEAL!

Wine list is mostly Old World for bottles, with a couple (apparently rotating) glass (CA/ WA/ OR) picks -- and super great deals on half-off Monday nights. DAMN I wish I lived closer!

Also, extremely vegetarian friendly -- I've got a vegetarian's trained eyes, and don't even pick up on the meaty options, but even my co-diners ended up picking all veggie options all meal, without even meaning too. Granted we got two orders of the beautiful roasted garlic bruchetta and carried the faint aroma with us for the next few days -- but so, so worth it!

So here's what you do -- get a glass of wine, plan on waiting (yes, even on a weeknight). Eat slow, get a few plates at a time, and share -- you'll order a couple times. And love it.

  • Pros: Reasonably priced, seasonal menu, good wine
  • Cons: Small space lead to long waits

Great idea not realized.

by Always Hungry 77

I read a great review in the magazine on my American Airlines flight, so I decided to check this place out. Everything looked promising and charming as described...but what we experienced was the furthest thing from what we expected.

I spent 30 minutes waiting for someone to ask me for a glass of wine. The waitstaff had no idea what they were doing. (asking tables what they had etc.) The system they have in place seems to be something you would find in small town USA which is not a bad thing, but the team didn't know how to handle the situation they created. We left after our wine at the make shift bar. Didn't get to try any food because no one asked us if we wanted anything. O well. The best part was watching the customers bring their dirty dishes to the back...and my fellow USC kids bringing in cases of beer from the store across the street and drinking it behind the bar. Have we graduated yet. C'mon people.

  • Pros: The big chalkboard is nice.
  • Cons: The worst service in Los Angeles.
