Defying its mall-like, pink stucco exterior, this pleasant boutique hotel is stylish on the inside. It is named after the 19th-century poet Thomas Carlyle, who was known for appreciating the "art of living well," something that can be achieved to a moderate degree while in residence.

Cozy guest rooms offer a splashy, daring design sensibility, as well as state-of-the-art amenities that include high-speed data ports and VCRs.
