With a special emphasis on bully breeds, such as pit bulls, Karma Rescue was founded by canine-lover Rande Levine to save at-risk dogs from L.A.'s high-kill shelters. Rather than housing dogs in one location, the non-profit, which operates completely by charitable donations, keeps dogs in various participating rescues and housing facilities throughout the region, from Burbank to Culver City to Downtown L.A. Volunteers can help by sponsoring, fostering, assisting at events or becoming a "Guardian Angel," a great option for those who want to spend time with animals but are not allowed to have…

Love this rescue! What a wonderful charity!

My fiance and I got involved with Karma Rescue over the holidays and it has proven to be the best Christmas present ever! Because we aren't allowed to have dogs where we live (discrimination!), we opted for the Guardian Angel program which allows us the chance to be a "Big Brother & Sister" to one dog at a time until s/he gets adopted into a permanent home. So far we have mentored 3 dogs -- each time one gets adopted, we get to spend time and bond with another one! We go on weekends and during the week whenever possible, depending on the location of the dog. (There isn't just one shelter; instead, the dogs are placed in good facilities where there is room for them.) Rande is the driving force behind the charity and her commitment is truly inspiring. It makes us want to continue this work and ultimately move into a place where we can have pets and foster animals.

  • Pros: Commitment to animals; all funds go directly to the dogs
  • Cons: We cant adopt them all!
