In Short
Just blocks from Manhattan Beach's waves, the sleek and modern Metlox mall is a cool, breezy locale for South Bay sushi lovers craving fresh tastes of the sea. The crowd is upscale yet casual, a mix of foodies, sake connoisseurs, salty beachgoers and surfish hipsters. Pale, sheer drapery and muted lighting soften the dining room, but the expansive salt-aired patio is where the action really is. Chef Makoto Okuwa studied with Japanese master Morimoto and appeared with him on "Iron Chef," so it's not surprising that his menu echoes the Nobu-esque haute stylings of contemporary Japanese L.A. cuisine. Expect dishes like a sashimi "tuna trio" of blue fin, toro and albacore, Jidori chicken cigars with shiso and wasabi, and spicy miso Chilean sea bass steamed in sake and jalapeno.

Atmosphere was pleasant,,the food was ok. I had the Sashi Roll, way too salty. Too much sauce and spicy mayo. Kobe Beef with chiso roll was disapointing. Too much flavors and not enough flavor. They should get rid of this dish. I would only recommend this place for drinks and not the food.

it was all about Hollywood and trendy dining. Like some other person wrote in his review, I'm honestly thinking that most of these reviews were written by the owner/staff & its friends.... My entire experience (ever since making my reservation) was about their trendy & with attitude style. My friends (group of 6) made reservations and we were seated almost a good hour after the actual reservation time. Beautiful restaurant, but sashi does not have the staff, sushi chef, technique and appearance to go with it. I honestly want my money back. Service was sooooo slow (and after having to wait an hour w/ reservation was a joke), none of us were even hungy, but we still ordered some food to see what people were woo-hoo-ing about.. Terrible mistake. Few orders of sushi and drinks and the bill came out to more than $200. Next time, I know to give my business to other sushi places in MB.

This place reminds me of Club Sushi in hollywood. They both have similar atmosphere and energy. Sushi+sake=a great night out.

The Details on Sashi: sushi + sake lounge

What to Drink:

The 50-plus sake list is exceptional, and the restaurant also has two sake sommeliers certified in Japan to offer pairing choices or design narrated tasting flights. Fruit-based sake-infused signature cocktails are also offered.

When to Go:

The sake lounge is especially popular on weekend nights, and a great place to experiment with new sakes and glean advice from the resident sake specialists. It's also nice to sample the appetizers there instead of a full sit-down meal.

The Extras:

The restaurant also has a robata grill.
