Great happy hour prices that let you order swanky gourmet food without having to have your parents cosign on the tab.
good lunch spot – never went when it used to more casual, so can't compare but i had a nice lunch here one day with some coworkers and tried diff stuff. lunch specials are good value, usually about $8.50 each and include soup, salad and rice. i like the 1/2 chicken best, very moist, while the snapper was ok but not remarkable. my spaghettin with roe was interesting, not sure i'd repeat, more of a novelty. wine list is very good, obviously someone knows what they are doing. i think corkage is reasonable. it's gets crowded at lunch. i don't think they take rez, so get there early or be willing to sit solo at the bar. service is good. patio is nice on pretty days.
odd food – I've only been here once for lunch. The patio is very nice, although you are right on Sawtelle. Our waitress was very prompt and pleasant. The food was ok---i had teriyaki chicken, but it didn't taste like what I'm used to. My husband thought the chicken wings were way too greasy. At least the price was reasonable. Probably wouldn't go back.
One of my FAVORITE restaurants on Sawtelle – Just kidding - this is actually one of my favorite restaurants in all of LA! Sawtelle Kitchen is VERY reasonably priced and has a great variety of Japanese homestyle dishes served in this little cottage. You won't find any of the items here from your local sushi bar - no rolls or raw fish, just really great pastas, salads, curries and entrees - especially the fish dishes (all cooked). Dinners include miso soup and rice or roll - go for the Japanese rice every time! Their fried sweet potato (sliced) with spicy mayonnaise is amazing, and I can't ever resist this funky dessert: coffee jello with cappuccino ice cream. Servers are extremely nice and I have never once had a problem or mistake here in over ten years of dining at Sawtelle Kitchen! I think they may now have a liquor license - but before it was BYOB.
User review by kerbear04 – Sawtelle Kitchen is a quaint, yet wonderfully done rest. on Sawtelle. Good quality Japanese/American food. As a former UCLA student, this was the place to go. A line forms early and space is limited so plan ahead.
Medicore for what you get – This place serves Japanese inspired American dishes - a popular trend in Japan. However, there are many places in LA that are both better and cheaper. The steak with ponzu sauce is a standard dish - but the sides are a little lacking (steamed vegetables just don't cut it). Prices are a little too high for what you get. They don't serve alcohol, but you can get bottle service.
Great, comfort food! – This is a great place to go to if you want to be reminded of your Japanese grandmother's kitchen. It has delicious curries (try the seafood one), interesting noodles, and a good selection of simple entrees. The garlic french fries were a bit disappointing - thicker and more like potato wedges, but the curries and noodles were fabulous!
