the best rolls in L.A.

by orangebang

I've been going here for nearly 10 years. While their regular sushi may not be up to par, their rolls are the best. What I like the most is that any of their spicy mixtures (spicy tuna, yellowtail, salmon, scallops) tastes like hawaiin poke (pronounced poh-kee)because they put green onion, sesame oil, and masago into the mixture. So if you like poke, you'll love most of their rolls. They also allow you to replace their nori on the rolls with their deliciously soft yellow soy paper. My usual order is 2 "crispy rolls", one with spicy yellowtail. This is a soy wrapper, with rice, spicy tuna, and tempura crumbs, which I also enjoy with a light drizzle of sweet eel sauce. My other favorite is the "Tokyo Nacho Chip", which consists of a deep fried sheet of nori, cut into 4 strips (which serves as the "chip"). Topped off with a heaping amount of spicy albacore. The amount of crunch, the cool of the spicy albacore, and the flavors of all the ingredients are just amazing.

  • Pros: VERY fast, extremely delicious, affordable
  • Cons: Parking is limited on street and meters

Really great sushi

by persilam

Located on Santa Monica Blvd, California Roll Factory is in a congested area with a lot of restaurants and sushi places nearby. If you are lucky you can find street parking or metered parking outside! I have tried a lot of sushi places and this is definitely one worthy of going back to. The "Santa Monica" roll and the "Chenzo" rolls were both really great, if you are into eel or like crispy/tempura like things. They have a very extensive sushi collection!

  • Pros: tasty fresh sushi
  • Cons: Hard to find parking, not good for large groups

Roll right in...

by jochu

If you are a sushi snob, don't come here. It will be your worst nightmare! With a name beginning with "California Roll," you can bet everything inside is Americanized. Not genuine Japanese cuisine AT ALL.

Now that we got that out of the way, let me introduce you to the best faux-Japanese sushi joint in town. It's off the hook! The menu is full (and by full, I mean bursting at the seams) of creative varieties of sushi rolls. Choices that don't fit on the menu are taped from ceiling to wall. It is a tiny spot that is always packed, so start contemplating your meal during the wait. You've probably got a good 45 minutes. My favorite is "Some Like It Hot" which has a splash of tabasco in between salmon and avocado. A thick layer of red sauce on top adds to the spice. I like how there are green scallions mixed throughout all the fish meat; it adds great flavor and texture. The portion size is large, too--8 per serving. I suspect that two people can split 3 orders of sushi rolls (so 12 total for the night) and be plenty satisfied. I give you the numbers ahead of time so you make sure every piece is rightfully yours. Your welcome.

Feel good at California Roll Factory. No one will laugh if you topple your chopsticks. Tip: Just use your fingers!

  • Pros: great food for what it is, generous portions, unbeatable price
  • Cons: cramped space, longggg wait

Not Good Sushi

by jnrcal

My friend who absolutely loves this place took me there last night, I was NOT impressed whatsoever. While the portions are huge, that is not appealing when it comes to sushi. I order the rainbow roll and it looked like it was literally thrown together. It was very sloppy and difficult to eat. The quality of the fish is not that great either. Parking is a nightmare, I ended up valeting my car at En Sushi which was just down the street for $3.50. The great thing I will say about California Roll Factory Sushi is the prices, the rolls and sushi are very inexpensive.

  • Pros: Prices
  • Cons: The sushi and parking
